General Description:

The VP of Architecture will be responsible for driving the technical roadmap and vision for D2L – advancing our application patterns, helping guide the transformation of our system for our next 100M learners, and engaging and leveraging our product engineering teams, our principal software engineers/architects, our technical leadership group (TLG), our managers and our platform SMEs to define, refine and improve our paved paths for the software work we do every day. This role is responsible for architecture approaches, direction and vision, that serve to guide the work on the technical advancement, consolidation, optimization and evolution of the Learning Innovation Platform underpinning solutions produced at D2L. Acting as one of the most important technical leaders for the company, mentoring and directing internal and external technical teams, working with the leaders of departments to align and execute the advancement of our software to support our business and product direction. Coaching and mentoring staff in D2L around architecture principles and methods, leading practices in system design, and AWS services for our large scale, cloud offering continuing to enhance the culture of a world-leading cloud company.

Responsibilities:
  • Outlining the key milestones and direction around how our software and technology evolves to provide an industry leading cloud education experience.
  • Working with key stakeholders to drive the roadmap priorities to ensure operational focus on architecture and platform advances (including product management, pre-sales, operations, and development)
  • Simplify and scale our engineering approach to minimize redundant product capabilities, define clear domain models, and help provide clarity on technical ownership and SMEs
  • Build out repeatable patterns in application design to ensure extensibility through configuration is a fundamental approach for D2L
  • Work with technical leadership groups to help scale the organization to effectively assess and scale the review of team’s technical approaches and to ensure aligned paths to the technical vision milestones
  • Drive the improvement of web-scale, AWS-first design processes at D2L working with the operational and platform teams
  • Guiding teams working on individual solution initiatives to line up their technology plans with specific platform advancement milestones
  • Working with teams onsite (travel) and virtually as needed to help drive strategy and objectives
  • Lead a team performing architecture work, working with engineering teams to ensure technological alignment, advancing D2L application, maximizing AWS platform benefits, and researching trends in technology frameworks and operational models.
  • Working with key technology partners around relevant engagements for advancing the D2L platform
  • Technical leadership around best of breed technology to meet user expectations and providing expert visibility to D2L into evolving industry work and standards (libraries, frameworks, tools)
  • Plan and revise organizational structure (as needed), hiring and development plans, and staff skills development to continue to evolve an effective technology culture at D2L
  • Mentor and coach teams on execution of strong technology and architecture design principles
  • Provide leadership and strategies around the ongoing improvement of the technology organization and its work within the company
  • Operational oversight of budgets, departmental costs and plans around key investment areas
  • Speaking with key customer leadership, faculty and staff to talk about our technology vision and their key needs and alignment with our vision
  • Speaking about architecture and cloud methodology and strategy at various D2L events or industry panels
