The Construction Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high quality facility services to the client site(s) and typically reports directly to the Division Manager. This position is responsible for managing and delivering full management solutions including safety compliance, people and resources, project execution, profit/loss outcomes, and ultimately the performance in the budget, schedule, general performance, and profitability.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage substation projects, including new facilities, major additions, rehab and retrofit projects.
  • Manage all aspects of assigned construction project(s) including:
    • maintain project-related documents
    • communications
    • team leadership
    • control of construction scope, cost, quality and schedule parameters/risk management
    • ensure quality standards are met
    • compliance with environmental, safety and Black & McDonald standards and policies
    • contracted services, equipment and material
    • interface with construction and commissioning
    • close activities with project acceptance; and
    • provide project status reports to team members and stakeholders

  • Supervise and coach the activities of subordinate unionized and non-unionized staff
  • Direct the purchase of supplies and materials
  • Manage substation projects, including new facilities, major additions, rehab and retrofit projects

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Degree or Diploma in

  • A technologist degree or significant relevant construction experience in all aspects of utility substation projects
  • 10 years of experience as a tradesperson in the electrical trade may substitute for education requirements
  • Construction Management

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 5+ years’ experience with a multi-trade contractor in the construction sector, ideally in Utilities/Substations
  • Experience managing substation projects
  • Experience with successful delivery of complex projects and possess team leadership skills
  • Demonstrate a high level of personal initiative and ability to interact with company personnel, contractors, utility representatives, and client personnel in a positive collaborative manner
  • Knowledge of substation operations and regulatory standards
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple projects under budget and time constraints. Bottom-line oriented, budget-conscious, metric/measurement driven
  • A license and a driving record that is in line with Black & McDonald’s Safe Driver policy is required

  • Blue print reading
  • Project structural design interpretation
  • Established utilities practices, procedures and techniques
  • Applicable local and provincial labour codes
  • Managing / leading union and non-union staff
  • Organization and time management
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Computer literacy, Microsoft Office
  • Track record of developing working relationships quickly and effectively
  • Must obtain and maintain necessary security clearances based on project requirements
