We’re looking for highly motivated and passionate mechanical engineer.

You will be part of the NPI Technology Introduction team within Field Services Engineering organization. As a key technical player on this team, you will ensure engineering readiness for the deployment of the global Services team by developing and delivering technical training for both Ciena and Ciena Partners employees. You will develop and present a series of technical deliverables that enable the introduction of new products. As a customer-facing engineer, you will be involved throughout the development cycle and drive consulting discussions with our customers and partners. You will be involved in architecture decisions and participate in product evolution reviews.

You will have the opportunity to collaborate with some of Ciena’s largest customers globally and will be at the forefront as we position our next generation solutions. You will directly contribute to winning new strategic business opportunities by demonstrating our leadership in the industry.

What will you do at Ciena?
  • Provide mechanical engineering support for both new product development activities as well as support of existing products
  • Translate product requirements into a mechanical specification and test plan to be used for deployments
  • Execute installation assessments in a lab environment as defined by the mechanical specification
  • Conduct design analysis and prepare reports on deficiencies found during prototype assessments
  • Provide onsite HW mechanical product installation training for SIF (Solution Integration Fulfilment) in Mexico and the USA
  • Provide installation training when required for Global Service Partners
  • Responsible for understanding customer needs with regards to racks/cabinets, PDU’s, rectifiers, fibers, etc. and work directly with OEM suppliers to fulfil requirements.
  • Work directly with mechanical designers on CAD models and specifications
  • Work with Product Documentation teams to generate Installation Procedures for all product lines
  • Calculate Time Standards for installing all new products and submit to the SPLM team for Services Quoting
  • Attend weekly Internal Program Meetings for all new products and generate Power Point slides for each milestone during the program
  • Provide field support for all HW related issues found during Greenfield and Brownfield deployments
  • Work closely with the Global Services Quality team and provide support for issues encountered during field quality audits
Requirements:
  • CAD or analysis tools exposure, and experience in mechanical design or analysis of electronic systems, structures and mechanisms
  • Must be able to apply the principles of Structural Mechanics to predict internal stresses and structural instabilities
  • Must be able to generate free body diagrams
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Show innovation through unique ideas and propose them to the team
  • Must be detail oriented, reliable and have the ability to work both in a team environment and alone with minimal direction and supervision
  • Work with other departmental staff to achieve NPI team objectives
  • Understands cultural aspects of business/regions
  • Analytical, detailed thinker with strong technical skills
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment where virtual teams will deliver mechanical/electrical product design sessions
  • Good social skills
  • Strong knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, Visio
  • Must be knowledgeable with Telcordia/NEBS standards
  • Ability to work and travel Globally (NA, CALA, APAC, EMEA) for extended periods to perform FOA’s (First Office Applications) on new GA products to validate Time Standards during customer installations and ensure Service Partner readiness has been achieved for the new product being installed
  • Travel may also be required to visit OEM manufacturing facilities to observe manufacturing processes and to qualify suppliers
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Materials Science Engineering or related field
  • 2 to 5 years’ experience in the industry, preferably in the Telecom industry
  • Junior or Senior standing in a BS, BA or master’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university
  • Proven strong academic performer with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Demonstrated ability to work with all cross-functional teams
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written communications skills
  • This position will require global travel. Must possess a valid driver’s license and passport. Travel will be min 30%.
