Our pulp and paper mills are complex facilities that sustainably convert trees and/or recycled fiber into products, such as boxes, sheets of paper, and fluff pulp for hygiene and other products. Hundreds of interrelated mechanical, electrical, and chemical unit processes provide unlimited opportunities to utilize a combination of technical and people skills.

Process Engineer, Intermediate – Grande Prairie, AB

Position Scope

The Process Engineer is an intermediate or senior technical resource within the operations and manufacturing excellence (ME) teams supporting one of the Grande Prairie mill’s operation business units. The operational business units encompass all processes for our Kraft pulp mill located in Grande Prairie, Alberta. The position requires relocation to Grande Prairie. The ME processes use Lean and Six Sigma concepts to help the mill identify, prioritize, and implement key process, reliability, and cost improvement projects. This specific position works within a larger ME team, which may lead to cross-functional responsibilities. The position reports to the Manager of Manufacturing Excellence.

Position Responsibilities

The Process Engineer will work closely with a variety of different functional groups throughout the mill including operations, maintenance, reliability, capital engineering, manufacturing excellence and management.
  • Provide visible and active leadership in delivering excellent safety results
  • Identify, develop, manage and deliver sustainable cost savings projects targeted at achieving year over year cost reduction performance through:
    • Multiple capital projects
    • Multiple non-capital deliberate and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Support cost reduction capital project development and implementation
  • Support the development and provide delivery of the Mill ME Belt training targets and goals for both hourly and salary employees
  • Manage and develop engineers in training (EIT) and co-op students
  • Achieve certifications in Lean Six-Sigma Green & Black Belts
  • Serve as a coach for employees working on their Belt projects
  • Maintain strong relationships with other process engineers as well as operating and maintenance department leaders
  • Influence business unit operations teams to utilize ME tools and processes to support successful project delivery and sustainability of improvements
  • Identify and implement best practices from across the mill, business, and company
  • Support the mill and business unit to advance 5S program by facilitating or coaching 5S improvement teams
  • Implement systems to improve/sustain results
  • Support operations during unplanned outages, planned maintenance outage and the annual outage.
  • Support and lead mill cost-reduction initiatives
  • Lead problem trouble shooting while utilizing reliability and ME skills set; RCFA, FMEA, 5 Why, Kepner Tregoe, Driver Tree, etc
  • Utilize data analysis tools to drive decision making; Minitab, Braincube, Simca
  • Implement, support and drive Braincube use in department
  • Support mill Production Model
  • Fulfill weekend duty as scheduled – on-call and week-end update meetings
  • Responsible for tracking implementation progress and results for cost reduction initiatives
  • Provide support for budgeting cycle targeted at delivering year over year savings; identify YOY initiatives
When the Process Engineer’s primary assignment lies within the operations department, the responsibilities include the following focus:
  • Develop process equipment expertise in a Kraft mill environment
  • Provide day-to-day technical support and process troubleshooting
  • Monitor key performance indicators to ensure reliable and low cost performance
  • Optimize processes and provide input on controls improvements
  • Manage small projects, trial plans and transition plans following capital deployment
  • Participate in Change Management
  • Supervise work or projects during outages
  • Participate or lead failure analysis of process equipment and procedures
  • Take-on operations-maintenance position coverage from time to time

  • Strong statistical analysis skills; Minitab, SIMCA, Braincube
  • Utilize the International Paper Management of Change process
  • Utilize structured project management to plan, resource and deliver projects and initiatives
  • Self-starter, team player, strong coach
  • Manufacturing Excellence (ME) Green Belt certification is a strong asset
  • Other Lean & Six Sigma certifications are a strong asset.
  • Utilize strong organizational skills to handle multiple tasks effectively
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in one of Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering is required; Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering is preferred
  • Minimum of 5-10 years’ operations, maintenance, or engineering experience in a Kraft pulp manufacturing environment is required
