GFL Environmental is looking for a Payroll Manager - Canada to join our team out of our Vaughan Corporate Office! Reporting to the Director - Payroll, North America, the Payroll Manager - Canada is responsible to perform and lead the day-to-day payroll operations in a fast-paced work environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for daily supervision of accurate, timely and confidential processing and distribution of payroll
  • Provide guidance, assistance and back-up support to payroll team members
  • Manage deliverables including day to day payroll transactions, absence audit, and tax inquiries with the goal of an error-free payroll result
  • Develop quality control and process review, perform audits to ensure proper controls are in place for accuracy and completeness of payroll functions
  • Partner with HR and Operations as required to resolve payroll issues
  • Recommend and implement new or enhanced payroll policies, procedures and processes to improve operational effectiveness
  • Perform all audits, reconciliations and reporting as required and assist in the preparation of all month-end and year-end related processing and manages the year-end T4 process reconciliation
  • Support Payroll month end related activities
  • Main point of contact for any urgent Payroll related inquiries, GL files and mapping, Payroll clearing account reconciliations, and payroll system changes and upgrades etc.
  • Oversee timely and accurate reconciliation of payroll funding, payroll taxes filing and reconciliation
  • Partner with Internal Audit, Finance and others to gain knowledge, maintain good relations and stay current on system and process improvements
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge on all payroll legislation, rules and any ongoing government requirements/compliance, and manage changes with internal partners

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:

  • 6-8 years of progressive payroll experience, with at least 3 years at a supervisory level
  • Certified Payroll Management Certification (CPM), Payroll Compliance Practitioner Certification (CPA), or Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) payroll designation is an asset
  • Positive team player with the ability to motivate and lead others
  • Demonstrate working knowledge and expertise in Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Employment Standards Act and other payroll related regulations, legislative requirements and compliance
  • Process and integration experience in Workday is preferred
  • Experience in development and maintaining internal control documents relating to Payroll Services
  • Self-starter with excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and able to prioritize complex tasks and meet critical deadlines
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively & courteously deal with employees, leaders and people external to the company
  • Able to exercise appropriate judgement and discretion in dealing with confidential information or material
