We are currently accepting applications from existing CVRD CUPE Local 556 members only for a full-time Lead Compost Facility Operator to join our Engineering Services team. The Lead Compost Facility Operator is responsible for coordinating, monitoring and performing the duties for the operation, maintenance, repair and upkeep of the Biosolids Compost Facility and related equipment. A key aspect of this role is the sampling and testing of products to ensure regulatory compliance and associated record keeping. Under the joint supervision of the Manager of Wastewater Services and the Manager of CVWMC Operations, the primary responsibilities of this role include:
- Assigning tasks, and guiding other operators to ensure workplace standards, product quality and safety procedures are followed;
- Monitoring data from HMI screens and testing results to make adjustments within established guidelines;
- Installing, monitoring, operating, maintaining and repairing compost equipment (conveyors, mixers, front end loaders, screening plants, pumps, blowers and other equipment) as required;
- Conducting testing and monitoring as required to maintain effective composting processes; making adjustments within defined limits to ensure compliance with regulations and permits;
- Coordinating product sales with commercial customers and responding to enquiries on product availability;
- Maintaining accurate recording of all data required to comply with regulatory agencies;
- Analyzing problems and assisting the manager(s) with the development and implementation of solutions;
- Recording and maintaining information into the computer system for analysis of data for process control, inventory control and plant maintenance;
- Maintaining an inventory of equipment, parts and supplies, and ordering;
- Performing various general housekeeping duties such as painting, cleaning and landscape maintenance;
- Testing, calibrating, maintaining and repairing equipment utilized in the operation, repair and maintenance of compost facilities based on qualifications.
Our ideal candidate is:
- Mechanically inclined with the ability to operate, repair and maintain heavy and processing equipment related to the work;
- Skilled in using mathematical formulas to determine compost mix ratios and other calculations;
- Safety-conscious with a demonstrated commitment to safe work practices;
- Team oriented with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively supervise and provide direction to others in the operation of a compost facility;
- Detail oriented with the ability to keep accurate and complete records, meet work schedules and maintain production targets and standards;
- Knowledgeable in biosolids composting principles and processes, regulatory requirements, standard practices, procedures, methods, tools and equipment;
- Experienced in the operation of a composting facility that utilizes an in-vessel or enclosed aerated static pile system with a minimum of two years of related experience;
- Experienced in the operation and maintenance of front-end loaders and other heavy equipment in a production and process-oriented operation with a minimum of four years of related experience;
- Certified in First Aid (Level 1) with a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License;
- Other preferred qualifications include: valid BC Class 3 driver’s license with air brake endorsement,Compost Council of Canada’s Compost Facility Operator certificate, certification in WHMIS and confined space entry.
