We are one team, with one goal and we all work together to continue making our community great.The OpportunityThe Parks and Forestry Branch is part of the City of Barrie’s Operations Department. The Branch is responsible for the management, maintenance, and ongoing care of over 3,100 acres of waterfront, parkland and open space including 127 parks and 145 kilometers of trails. Services include horticulture displays and maintenance, turf management, shoreline maintenance, maintenance of parks amenities such as playgrounds, play courts, picnic shelters, and spray pads, waste collection, landscape construction, City’s outdoor rink program, greenhouse operations, trails maintenance, and winter snow removal operations.The Forestry Learner is part of a front-line team directly responsible for performing all required maintenance of municipal trees within the City of Barrie. Maintenance activities include assisting with the inspection, pruning, removal and replacement of trees on streets and in active and passive parkland throughout the City. This is an entry-level forestry position with day-to-day responsibilities related to assisting the Forestry Journeypersons with urban arboriculture which is integral in ensuring that the citizens of Barrie enjoy a safe urban forest along with all of the benefits that a healthy urban forest canopy provides.The Operations Department is establishing an eligibility list of qualified candidates who will be considered for future casual full-time opportunities, including upcoming casual full-time, up to 8 months (April - November 2023) opportunities. Applying to this candidate pool enables a candidate’s application to be maintained on file so that they may be considered should a casual full-time vacancy become available. The eligibility list will remain in effect for a maximum of nine (9) months, unless depleted before that time. The administration of this candidate pool will be done in accordance with Article 13:06 of the Collective Agreement.Our Culture And Qualifications Of The JobCorporate Culture

Education(degree/diploma/certifications)
  • Secondary School Diploma
  • Working towards and in the process of obtaining a College Certificate in Urban Arboriculture or related discipline from an accredited association, organization and/or institution
  • Certificate for Chainsaw Safety and Cutting Techniques obtained within the last 3 years
Experience
  • Six (6) months of experience performing duties related to the above mentioned major responsibilities
  • Demonstrated experience working for a municipality in arboriculture / urban forestry
  • Demonstrated professional experience removing all sizes of hazardous trees
  • Demonstrated professional experience pruning, deadwooding, stump grinding, etc
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
  • General knowledge of urban arboriculture and chainsaw maintenance
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • deal with the public in a courteous and efficient manner to promote a high standard of customer service and public relations at all times
    • learn computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel) as well as other Tree Inventory (e.g. TRIMS) and Work Order (e.g. Cityworks) systems

Other Important InformationLocation: Operations Center, 165 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie, OntarioHours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement.Wage: This position is within the CUPE Local 2380 Bargaining Unit with the following pay level and 2023 pay range:
  • Pay Level: Level 2
  • Yearly Salary: $48,089.60 to $57,512.00 per year
  • Hourly Pay Rate: $23.12 to $27.65 per hour
