Farm Manager, Full Time – Lookout Mission Community Garden, Mission Minimum Institution

The Lookout Mission Community Garden is a partnership between the Correctional Service of Canada and the Lookout Housing & Health Society, with the main mandate of growing organic fruit and produce as a means to support meaningful work for incarcerated men, and provide high quality produce to community organizations and food insecure communities free of cost. At its peak productivity, the Community Garden has produced 175,000 pounds of produce, the vast majority of which is donated to local and regional groups who face barriers to food security.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Developing, organizing, supervising, and prioritizing the work and activities of incarcerated men assigned to work at the farm.
  • Teaching and training workers in planting, harvesting, and safety procedures, as well as mentoring, monitoring, and planning the learning experiences of all participants.
  • Understanding the implications of the weather and making contingency plans if the day’s planned activities cannot be carried out.
  • Designing and implementing systems to manage labour and equipment and proposing creative solutions to farming problems.
  • Keeping records of employees’ hours, supplies used, and work completed.
  • Maintaining farm data for analysis and action with respect to crop yields, input costs, pest control measures, and crop rotation, etc.
  • Managing greenhouse production and scheduling.
  • Ordering farm supplies as necessary and on a timely, cost-effective basis.
  • Ensuring organic practices are used whenever possible in all aspects of the farming operation.
  • Ensuring farm activities comply with government environmental regulations.
  • Maintaining and monitoring quality of produce.
  • Ensuring the farm proceeds are donated to community organizations that serve homeless and or at-risk populations.
  • Arranging for food storage, pick-up, and delivery of produce to recipient organizations, including potential delivery of produce to organizations along with incarcerated workers on day passes.

Qualifications:

  • Practical experience in farm operations and management and current working knowledge of organic farming practices and food production.
  • Valid driving license and safe driving record
  • Enhanced Reliability Screening Clearance through Correctional Service of Canada.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to adapt to working in the correctional environment, and to train, motivate, and supervise federally incarcerated men in trauma-informed and relationship centered ways.
  • Ability to be compassionate when working with incarcerated workers.
  • Flexibility, adaptability and ability to work well in the complexity of the federal prison environments.
  • Ability to use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioural management techniques. Experience working with people with mental illnesses and substance use an asset.
  • An understanding of the socio-economic and historic determinants of crime and incarceration.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.
  • Good practical management, mechanical, and financial skills.
  • Ability to use and repair machinery including tractors, spraying equipment etc., and to apply health and safety standards.
  • Good working knowledge of marketing and marketing strategies.
  • Good working knowledge of farming production schedules.
  • Basic computer literacy essential. Ability to use business management and crop management software tools an asset
