Introduction:

*
With an annual budget in excess of $1 million, 1,200 dedicated volunteers, and over 2,500 cats adopted a year, Toronto Cat Rescue (TCR) is an organization with an incredible impact in the animal rescue community. TCR is seeking an innovative and collaborative leader to strengthen its structure and increase its ability to save lives.

Established in 1994, Toronto Cat Rescue is a volunteer-driven, registered charity. As one of the largest rescue groups in Canada, TCR has a prominent place in cat rescue across the country. TCR receives no government funding - we operate through adoption fees, private donations, fundraising activities, and corporate and foundation grants. While we have Toronto in our name, TCR supports a geographic area from as far east as Whitby to as far west as Oakville, and also operates a Kitchener-Waterloo Chapter. TCR has no shelter. We are a network of volunteer foster homes that care for the cats we rescue until they are adopted.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the leadership, management, and daily operations of TCR. The work of the Executive Director is supported by three staff member direct reports and teams of volunteers headed by volunteer leaders. If you have outstanding leadership, collaboration, and organization skills, and enjoy directing dynamic and incredibly dedicated volunteer teams (almost) as much as you love animals, this job may be the perfect fit for you. TCR recognizes that strong candidates may not possess all the position competencies and encourages candidates who meet and excel in many of the areas described to apply.

Position Competencies and Responsibilities

Senior Leadership in the Not-for-Profit Sector

  • Lead staff, volunteers, and partners to ensure TCR’s current and future success; foster effective teamwork and inter team dynamics; set performance objectives with employees and manage performance
  • Motivate, inspire and direct a predominantly volunteer organization, and build a robust organizational structure. Ensure a succession plan is in place for key staff and senior volunteers and monitor organizational health
  • Ensure the TCR volunteer experience is exceptional and positive, including a thorough onboarding process and regular checkpoints with volunteers
  • Support, mentor and coach staff and volunteer team leaders. Provide strategic guidance to staff and operational volunteer leaders and work with them to set goals and standards that serve TCR’s needs.
  • Ensure the efficient and effective running of the day-to-day operations.

Not-for-Profit Governance and Board Experience

  • Collaborate with the Board in its development of a multi year strategic plan, Board policies, and annual reviews of selected policy areas.
  • Ensure the organization is in compliance with all laws and regulations to manage risk
  • Foster effective teamwork between the Board and Executive Director
  • Identify, develop and revise procedures to implement organizational policies as needed
  • Oversee the organization’s administration team and continue the development of data management and information security for the organization; maintain secure storage of employee, adopter, donor and volunteer files, ensuring that privacy/confidentiality is maintained
  • Serve as an ex-officio member of each board committee

Public Relations and Marketing

  • Represent TCR in the community, media, coalition organizations, and TCR events, maintaining and raising the organization’s public profile and positive reputation
  • Oversee volunteer marketing staff to ensure frequent, consistent, and effective messaging, including social media

Financial Management

  • Work closely with the Finance Committee, and lead the development, monitoring and reporting on the annual budget in accordance with the year’s operational plan
  • Monitor the organization’s finances and cash flow; provide regular reports to the Board and support independent audits
  • Make daily and monthly financial decisions
  • Work closely with the Board’s Finance Committee to manage financial controls and policies in accordance with CRA regulations

Fundraising Management

  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including select funders and rescue partner organizations
  • Ensure TCR donors feel valued and appreciated. Cultivate donations and leverage the donor database to drive donor engagement
  • Develop an annual and strategic fundraising plan that will produce sustainable revenue generation for TCR. This should include the identification and stewardship of both donors and grant money.
