The Urban Forestry Technician is part of a multi-jurisdictional team that delivers urban forestry services and expertise. They implement bylaws that impact public trees, complete development reviews, perform risk assessments, and educate others on related urban forestry topics to ensure that the City has a healthy, safe and sustainable urban forest. Primary duties include:

  • Preserve and protect the Urban Forest by reviewing and commenting on development permit applications and plans, performing field inspections of site prior to any development and during development, assess tree condition and appraise the tree’s monetary value, review and approve public tree removal requests, and enforce and ensure compliance to City Tree Protection Bylaws.
  • Perform all levels of tree risk assessments of the Urban Forest. Respond and resolve public inquiries pertaining to public trees. Liaise with other business units on legal issues related to public trees.
  • Represent Urban Forestry on a range of construction projects delivered by internal business units and external companies; prepare specialized technical reports, proposals and practical manuals that provide detailed analysis.
  • Deliver informational sessions on tree health, planting and pruning; educate internal staff and external clients on trees, best practices, valuations and Urban Forestry policies, procedures and programs.
Qualifications
  • A completed 2 year diploma in horticulture, forestry or a related field plus at least 5 years of experience OR a Journeyman Landscape Gardener certificate and at least 6 years of experience is required.
  • Certifications with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) is required.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits (OR a valid Graduated Driver’s Licence (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits) and no current charges or suspensions pending is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, 311 Motorola System, Public One Stop Service Experience (POSSE), Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Parks Asset Reporting and Information System (PARIS) will be considered assets.
  • A Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) certification will be considered an asset.
  • You have excellent communication skills, presentation skills, negotiation skills, leadership skills, project management skills and business acumen with the ability to work in a political environment and interpret landscape drawings.
Pre-employment Requirements
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator’s permit.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
Pre-employment Drug Test:
An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
