Position purpose:
As part of the Office of Communications and Government Relations team, helps ensure quality of University communications. Provides English to French translation services as well as French-language editing, proofreading and adaptation of diverse texts from all University sectors. Advises on terminology and language and contributes to the smooth running of the service.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:
Translate from French to English, and edit, proofread and adapt a wide range of moderately to highly complex French-language documents from all sections of the University.

Manage assigned client files and projects, negotiate deadlines and maintain ongoing relations with many internal and external clients and partners.

Provide expert advice to colleagues and other members of the University community on language, translation and terminology.

Help coordinate common language service tasks: evaluating service requests and assigning work in an optimal manner to both internal and external language professionals, and adjusting workload based on changing priorities.

Monitor the quality of translations and other texts produced internally and externally, particularly with regard to language precision, style and content.

Help manage, develop and improve online language resources (writing guide, terminology database, etc.) and helps promote these tools on campus.

Play a role in improving internal language service operations and processes, recommending best practices.

Participate closely in managing and improving information systems required for smooth service operations and helps with the implementation of new systems and applications as needed.

What you will bring:
Bachelor’s in translation or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience

Certification by a professional association (an asset)

Three years’ recent experience in a position in which at least 70% of the work involved actual translation in a translation service or a structured environment with language professionals

Sufficient mastery of translation, editing, writing, adaptation, terminology and proofreading techniques to work completely independently

Strong command of written French, with solid understanding of English

Flawless work

Excellent customer service skills, with proven ability to provide in-depth advice on language to a diverse clientele, to ensure high-quality communication and standardized usage

Considerable versatility, including the proven ability to translate, edit and adapt promotional and journalistic texts as readily as complex administrative, technical or scientific documents

Proven ability to take on a heavy workload, adjust priorities and quickly renegotiate deadlines in a high-pressure work environment characterized by many emergencies and frequent interruptions

Initiative, strong problem-solving skills and proven ability to manage complex translation and editing projects involving numerous parties

Proven ability to negotiate with clients and, at times, with external providers

Working knowledge of print and electronic reference tools used in the profession, including translation memories

Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully in English and French, both orally and in writing
