Days/Hours:
Monday to Friday / 40 hours per week

Reporting to the Manager, Fleet Services this position is responsible for the daily repair and maintenance of the City of Vernon’s fleet of vehicles and equipment. This working Supervisor also provides direction and control of employees and contractors engaged in Fleet maintenance and repair. This position will provide skilled mechanical work at the journeyman level including a variety of tasks relative to the repair, service and maintenance of the City of Vernon Fleet.

Duties Include:

  • Performs scheduling and coordinating of the daily repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment in the City fleet, utilizing the computerized maintenance management system.
  • Oversees all work performed by Fleet Services including the repair and maintenance activities related to shop and field service.
  • Supervises the Fleet staff to ensure compliance with all Provincial and/or Federal regulations, City of Vernon policies, and WorkSafeBC regulations.
  • Reviews daily time sheets for accuracy and completion.
  • Reviews all work orders, for accuracy with time, parts, services, repair information and completion.
  • Provides input to manager on staff performance and provides supporting documentation related to staff disciplinary matters.
  • This role also includes the opportunities to design, lead, and assemble Fleet projects including the installation and calibration of snow and ice control components.
  • Participates in fleet condition assessments and makes recommendations to determine end of lifecycle. Responsible for establishing and maintaining inventory level of shop consumables.
  • Participates in the procurement process reviewing specifications and proposals of new and replacement vehicles and equipment.
  • Provides direction to staff regarding the procurement of parts as required.
  • Performs servicing and preventive maintenance and repairs in both the Shop and field on a variety of City Fleet vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs repairs, trouble shooting, and regular servicing on power train, electrical, charging, hydraulic and fuel systems on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs inspections and adjustments to air brake systems to ensure compliance with the National Safety Code and B.C. Motor Vehicle Act.
  • Performs repairs to small tools used in construction (i.e., chain saws, tampers, pumps).
  • Maintains equipment and tools used in performance of work in a clean safe manner, and keeps work area clean and tidy.
  • Completes, checks, and corrects fuel reports to ensure proper billing and allocation, as required.
  • Audits and corrects weekly fuel reports and uploads data to the CMMS (Innovative Maintenance Systems), as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • All persons employed by the City of Vernon will be required to assist the City in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties.



Required Education and Experience:

  • Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic Certificate, and or Commercial Transport Mechanic (Truck and Transport Mechanic) including an Inter-provincial Standards Red Seal
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic or Truck and Transport Mechanic in the repair and maintenance of construction equipment, heavy duty trucks, and machinery including a minimum two years supervisory experience in the mechanical repair environment, supplemented by supervisory skills and leadership courses
  • Valid B.C. Driver’s License (Class 3) with Air Brake Endorsement
  • WHIMS Training
  • A combination of related education and experience may be considered.



Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A thorough knowledge of Fleet operations and the ability to prioritize, delegate, and monitor work flows to maximize efficiencies and minimize critical equipment down time
  • Thorough knowledge of Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement standards, programs and regulations and the City of Vernon obligations under the authorized Preventative Maintenance Program
  • Knowledge of Ministry of Transportation overweight, over width permit procedures
  • Commercial Vehicle Inspectors Authorization or the ability to obtain
  • Solid working knowledge of a computerized maintenance management system (IMS)
  • Good working knowledge of GPS systems
  • Ability to use hand power tools and equipment such as power wrenches, grinders, hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and related automotive, and heavy duty shop equipment. Able to use acetylene torches, welder, grinder, and other tools related to the welding trade
  • Ability to operate a variety of vehicles and equipment for the purpose of road testing upon completion of repairs
  • Good working knowledge of computers and related software, and general office equipment
  • Superior mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, drawings and sketches
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy, courtesy and tact when dealing with City of Vernon staff, contractors, service providers and regulatory agencies
  • Ability to provide work direction to the crew, delegate work assignments, resolve minor interpersonal issues and problem solve
  • Ability to assist, advise, and direct staff in the operation, repair and maintenance of City vehicles and equipment
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job including regular heavy lifting of (>50 lbs)
  • Ability to work in the shop or field with exposure to noise, heat, intermittent sitting, crouching, standing, in all weather conditions
  • Ability to make sound decisions related to work assignments and within an approved budget
  • Ability to obtain Forklift training
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an acceptable driver’s abstract
  • Ability to obtain advanced trade qualifications and courses to keep current with technologic and regulatory requirements



Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Automotive Mechanic Repair Trades Certificate
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician Certificate
  • Knowledge of alternate fuel technologies for internal combustion engines
  • Good knowledge of Word and Excel
