Help Edmonton become Greener as it Grows, by supporting Edmonton’s environmental sustainability initiatives as the Senior Scientist overseeing Integrated Pest Management.

In this role, you’ll oversee our Field Operations Lab and Biodiversity Monitoring Program, steering environmental and pest management efforts related to Open Space Operations. Reporting to the Integrated Pest Management Supervisor, you’ll be instrumental in researching, planning, and implementing innovative solutions, supporting service requests, addressing public concerns, and shaping council initiatives. You will lead a team of technicians researching and monitoring biodiversity within the city, with a focus on ensuring the long term sustainability of Edmonton’s ecosystems.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton’s Culture Commitments to be Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated, and Excellent, you will:

  • Develop, in conjunction with the operational areas, action plans to address pest issues in the City of Edmonton
  • Create evaluation reports to assess the effectiveness of pest management strategies
  • Develop and update the City of Edmonton’s Integrated Pest Management Policy
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the City of Edmonton to ensure that pest management strategies align with broader environmental goals and priorities
  • Lead and supervise staff, providing guidance, feedback, and support as needed
  • Develop environmental objectives, targets, and improvement initiatives including implementing research projects that align with the City of Edmonton’s goals related to ecology, biodiversity monitoring, and entomology
  • Ensure adherence to monitoring and meeting baseline requirements of Corporate Systems
  • Develop and execute research projects in partnership and collaboration with research organizations, post-secondary institutes or other orders of governments
  • Work closely with stakeholders to understand their needs and priorities related to ecology, biodiversity monitoring, and entomology
  • Support a regional approach to existing and emergent pest issues
  • Provide subject matter expertise into the IPM strategic communication plan to ensure that research findings related to ecology, biodiversity monitoring, and entomology are effectively communicated to the media, the public, and other stakeholders
  • Respond to media inquiries and provide expert commentary or interviews on issues related to ecology, biodiversity monitoring, and entomology
Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Natural Sciences or a related field and four years of experience in leading and managing teams in delivering research projects, including experimental design and proficiency in laboratory/field techniques, in fields like ecology, biodiversity monitoring, or entomology
    OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Sciences or a related field and six years of experience in leading and managing teams in delivering research projects, including experimental design and proficiency in laboratory/field techniques, in fields like ecology, biodiversity monitoring, or entomology
  • 5 years of experience in coordinating technical data and translating it to provide operational direction/support
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and direct the work of staff
  • Professional designation in a related scientific field, such as Professional Biologist (P.Biol) or Professional Chemist (P.Chem)
  • Project management certifications, such as Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, to support effective project management
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and present scientific reports and papers that support operational decision-making
  • Ability to make sound decisions with an understanding of budgetary and political implications
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent). Must obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business

Hours of Work:33.75 hours per week
The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
Salary:$51.232 - $64.710 (Hourly)
