The Senior Mechanical Designer is fully competent in Mechanical design for electronics enclosures; including plastic injection molding design, label design, sheet metal design, and thermal management design. They will typically fill the role of Mechanical Technical Lead on a project team.

The Senior Mechanical Designer is expected to complete design from sketch, prototyping, research and basic testing of new or existing hardware projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Senior Mechanical Designer will:

  • Develop mechanical design projects including the design, planning and scheduling in accordance with established procedures and guidelines as described in the Product Development Process.

Research and Design

  • Research new technology in alignment with long term product strategy roadmap
  • Perform a technical analysis and feasibility of proposed designs
  • Assist in the creation of product mechanical design requirements.
  • Assist in creation of the project schedule along with the Project Manager.
  • Identification of project risks and potential mitigation of risks.
  • Perform cost analysis of designs and proposed designs.
  • Ensure component selection follows standard criteria.
  • Perform thermal simulation and analysis of designs in early stages
  • Generate conceptual 3D model designs
  • Prepare die cut and artwork for labels
  • Liaison with mold makers and other suppliers

Quality and Testing

  • Perform preliminary product testing.
  • Assist in creation of test plans for new product designs.
  • Assist in the creation of quality test procedures for new product designs and existing products.
  • Perform design reviews other designer’s work against requirements, design and quality standards.
  • Analyze product failures or issues and contribute to the resolution of these issues.
  • Provide support with any mechanical issues in Production
  • May be required to travel to manufacturing facilities for mechanical components to discuss manufacturing issues or be part of supplier evaluation

Documentation

  • Produce design documentation to communicate the design to the other teams involved in product development; QA Hardware, Manufacturing, Electrical Design
  • Liaison with manufacturing to ensure new product designs meet manufacturing standards.

Other

  • Assist in mentoring more junior mechanical designers
