As a summer student, you will be given meaningful, productive and challenging assignments while being introduced to a career in municipal government. The Secondary Suites Program Student will participate in and support the implementation and advancement of the secondary suites program, while building their knowledge and skill set in customer service, municipal administrative processes, residential construction, and building codes. Primary duties include:
  • Work with internal secondary suite team (stakeholders from Calgary Building Services and Community Planning)
  • Partipcate in the development and implementation of short term and long term strategies to promote safety and increase permit applications for legal, registered suites within Calgary.
  • Engage with current suite owners, assist with applications and inform about process and safety requirements.
  • Help to identify strategies to detect illegal suites and follow up with citizens.
  • Manage difficult situations with empathy and strive for positive encounters and results with citizens.
Qualifications
  • Enrolled in a diploma or degree in Architectural Technologies, Architecture, Planning Technologies, Urban Planning, Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, or related educational disciplines.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.
  • Previous customer service experience and knowledge of the municipal administrative processes is an asset.
  • Familiarity of Calgary’s Land Use Bylaw and knowledge of the 2019 National Building Code – Alberta Edition will be considered assets.
  • Experience with residential construction and experience with collecting and interpreting formal and informal data is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, including confidence in leading meetings with a variety of stakeholders.
  • A team player who has the ability to work autonomously with little supervision.
  • Able to collect and interpret formal and informal data.
  • Excited about improving municipal process to support the citizens of Calgary.
  • Relational, patient and empathetic in difficult situations, c onflict resolution and problem solving skills.
Pre-Employment Requirements
  • Must be currently enrolled in school on a full-time basis with the intent to return to school full-time in the Fall of 2022
