THE INSTITUT UNIVERSITAIRE DE CARDIOLOGIE ET DE PNEUMOLOGIE DE QUÉBEC – UNIVERSITÉ LAVAL
(THE INSTITUTE) IS A UNIQUE HOSPITAL CENTRE
Per year 16,346 people are hospitalized and 129,008 visits were made on an outpatient basis for 45,072 users. The service area is more than two million people, which represents approximately 30% of Quebec’s population. Affiliated with Université Laval, the institution counts on the cooperation and the dedication of more than 3,000 employees, physicians, professionals, researchers, managers as well as volunteers for providing quality care and services to both hospitalized and outpatient clienteles. The Institute offers in particular programs of specialized and ultraspecialized care and services to treat cardiovascular, respiratory and obesity-related diseases. The Institute’s physicians and health professionals have extensive expertise, and contribute to advancing science. The Institute also has as its mission to assess technologies and intervention methods in health. The Institute’s Research Centre is the only facility subsidized by the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS) that brings together research components in cardiology, respirology, and obesity-type 2 diabetes-metabolism. The Research Centre’s vision is to play an international significant role in the fight against societal chronic diseases through its model of integrated science in cardiology, respirology, and obesity-metabolism. It counts on the cooperation of 177 researchers and physicians scientists, many of whom are recognized as being leaders in their field. These world-class researchers are among the most productive in Quebec. The perfect correspondence of the research components to the Institute’s specializations also ensures a synergy between clinicians and researchers, thereby allowing a rapid knowledge transfer to the care.

SUMMARY OF ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the functional authority of the President and CEO, the position holder is to both provide leadership of the Institute’s Research Centre and the scientific activities that take place there. The mandate of this position is to establish and support a shared and inspiring strategic and scientific vision, which is grassroots-driven to the development, the formulation of orientations and priorities, and the outreach of the Institute’s Research Centre. The person is to play a central role in the direction and coordination of research activities carried out at the Institute, particularly with respect to the design, implementation, monitoring and adaptation of its strategic development plan. The position ensures the effective use of resources in achieving the Centre’s objectives. The holder works in close collaboration with directors of the research components, the Research Administrative Director and the Directorate of Academic Research managers. The position supports and mobilizes the executive team as well as researchers in the deployment and achievement of their activities. The holder is responsive to the needs of the research community. The person guides and handles the development of services as well as infrastructure supporting research, and that while respecting the needs and available financial, human, material resources. The holder develops and directs the implementation of scientific programming in a coherent way with the Research Centre’s priority research themes.
The position holder is to have a sustained collaboration with other leaderships of the institution.
Exigences :
  • Professor, or even clinical professor from Quebec, Canadian or international university, with a Ph.D. or academic training in the health field as well as strong background in research
  • Ten years of experience as an independent researcher
  • Experience and qualifications enabling the person to be appointed to a position of professor within one of Université Laval’s health science faculties
  • Being a member in good standing of her/his professional order
  • Very good knowledge of the Institute, the health and social services network, as well as the university research networks
  • Knowledge of how FRQS research centres and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research operate in practice settings is desirable
  • Solid experience in research subsidized by recognized funding agencies and participating in important projects as principal investigator
  • Recognized profile of research leader and experience in managing research projects

  • Excellent communication skills, in both French and English, fostering the productive networks with health professionals and managers from practice settings, university partners, other research centres, private and industrial partners, philanthropic foundations, communities and public policy-makers.
