Under the supervision of the Managing Librarian, the Library Information Specialistwill collaborate with faculty, researchers, library staff and other student service areas to design and deliver services and resources that enhance learning and research at Bow Valley College. The library information specialist is expected to monitor and implement best practices in information literacy education, scholarly publishing and the design of online and physical library services.
The position will perform other duties as needed that contribute to the goals and objectives of library operation. The position requires evening and weekend shifts. Work schedules may be adjusted through the year due to operations.

Information Services and Education - 60%

  • Provide information services to students; including library training and orientation as well as one-on-one assistance in the navigation and use of information to support assignments.
  • Provide support for the ethical use of information through education around plagiarism and proper citation and referencing.
  • Act as a liaison between the library and Bow Valley College faculty by providing library instruction, resource support, and curriculum resource guidance.
  • Promote the role of the Library to the Bow Valley College community through outreach to faculty, students and other college departments.
  • Update and develop online content in accordance with best practice in user design.
  • Use appropriate technology for communications, presentations, and program promotion.
  • Participate in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of information literacy education to students.

Software administration and management 10%

  • Troubleshoot problems arising in the ILS (Integrated Library System).
  • Ensure the smooth operation of the ILS and self-checkout technology.
  • Manage software that controls room and seat booking, FAQ knowledgebase, online guides, online tutorials and student assessments.
  • Set-up and configure access to electronic resources, including troubleshooting technical issues.

Collection Development - 10%

  • Liaise with appropriate department members to develop collections which support course curriculum.
  • Select print, audiovisual, and electronic resources in alignment with curriculum.
  • Analyze use to inform decision-making on renewals and licensing of electronic resources.
  • Manage allocated acquisition budget.
  • Recommend items for the library collection based upon communication with schools.
  • Weed the existing collection as required.

Scholarly publishing – 15%

  • In collaboration with schools and departments, support the growth, development, and evolution of the college’s research repository.
  • In collaboration with schools and departments, support the creation and/or adoption of OER and manage related publication processes.
  • Monitor developments in open access publishing, including OER; institutional repositories and technological initiatives; and communicate their implications to college stakeholders.

Other Duties - 5%

  • Ensure adherence to Bow Valley College procedures and policies.
  • Actively participate in regularly scheduled library team meetings.
  • Serve on library committees as requested.
  • Attend meetings representing the college and/or the library as needed.
  • Perform other duties as requested by supervisor that contribute to the overall goals and objectives of the library.

Job Requirements
Minimum Requirements

  • Completion of a Masters of Library and Information Science degree from an ALA accredited library program.
  • 1 to 2 years
  • Understanding of searching and researching techniques of both print and electronic materials
  • An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered

  • Demonstrated good judgement, a good general knowledge of library techniques and practices
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Intermediate to advance working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to learn and teach new skills and computer applications
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to train and supervise the work of others
  • Ability to adjust workflow based on customer demand and LLC vision
  • Ability to perform detained tasks quickly and accurately is essential

This is a continuous (AUPE) position. Please note all successful candidates will be required to provide copies of government issued identification and proof of educational qualifications upon hire and may be required to provide an enhanced police information check.
