THE ROLE
PETRONAS Canada currently has a vacancy for a Legal Counsel to join our team in Calgary on a one (1) year contract. Reporting to the Manager, Legal, the incoming Lawyer will provide pragmatic and timely legal support to a variety of working groups to protect and advance the interests of our Canadian business.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Review and advise on a range of legal items including commercial matters (procurement process, contract negotiations…etc.), employment, privacy and workplace health and safety.
• Work closely with the Human Resources group on matters including benefits entitlement, disability leave, progressive discipline and termination.
• Manage some litigation files, including strategy and settlement negotiation.
• Create and enhance the forms, templates and other documents used by the organization to comply with applicable laws, best practices and internal policy requirements.
• Conduct legal awareness training to address business needs and areas of risk.
• Be an active and contributing member of the PETRONAS Canada legal team
• Occasionally retain, instruct and manage external counsel.

• Strong interpersonal skills to become a trusted advisor for various business groups with different needs, timelines and levels of legal sophistication.
• Solid working knowledge of procurement processes, employment, privacy and occupational health & safety matters.
• Able to work independently with a proven ability to multi-task, be detail-oriented and efficiently respond to changing priorities.
• Utilize a problem-solving mindset with a focus on timely, practical and fit for purpose solutions.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to be clear and persuasive verbally and in writing.

MUST HAVES

• Law Degree from an accredited post-secondary institution.
• Member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
• Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience working in private practice or as in-house counsel.
