The Opportunity

We are currently accepting applications for the role of Legal Counselbased in Toronto, ON.

Reporting to VP Legal of Glencore Canada Corporation, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing high quality general legal advice and support to Glencore’s Canadian operations in all aspect of their business, including business development, regulatory, environmental, exploration, contract negotiation, property management, commercial sales, employment matters and dispute resolution. The role will present a significant opportunity for professional growth and initiative in a dynamic in-house legal environment for the successful candidate.

The Legal Counsel will be a hands-on lawyer who will be expected to become an integrated member of Glencore Canada’s business team(s) and tackle significant legal work him/herself. The role will be accountable for raising awareness within the operations on compliance and corporate governance, protecting and enhancing the legal position of the operations and in reducing risk exposure.

Qualifications

  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada or other relevant jurisdiction;
  • Fluently bilingual (French & English);
  • Minimum 3+ years legal experience in private practice at a top tier law firm or as in-house legal counsel in a large international company environment;
  • Solid legal training and pragmatic experience in a significant variety of corporate legal matters, including commercial, environmental, regulatory, contractual negotiation, corporate governance and/or dispute resolution;
  • Extractive industry experience and interest will be beneficial;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with effective research & analytical skills;
  • Ability to quickly grasp legal and business issues and provide tailored legal advice and counsel in plain language;
  • Ability to provide timely advice in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment;
  • Ability to take leadership of and manage discrete legal projects in a cross-functional team environment;
  • Some travel required.
