The Ministry of Finance is responsible for oversight of government revenue, expenses, assets and liabilities. In addition to other responsibilities, Finance is the lead ministry for fiscal policy; budget development and integrity; and ensuring accountability to both the public and the Legislative Assembly for the use of public funds.

The Opportunity

The Economic and Fiscal Policy Branch, which plays a key role in the government’s fiscal planning and reporting process, is seeking a fiscal policy analyst who will be responsible for:

  • Providing the Minister of Finance, Treasury Board, and the government with analysis and policy advice on a wide range of fiscal issues and economic trends that affect the Province’s finances;
  • Assisting in the development of government’s overall fiscal policy objectives, preparing and presenting alternative policy positions, and analyzing current trends and the impacts of alternative policy options;
  • Coordinating and compiling fiscal forecasts for the medium and long term, which includes working in strategic partnership with internal and external stakeholders on those forecasts; and,
  • Preparing publications and presentations on the government’s fiscal outlook for use by a wide ranging client group.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about using financial data to solve complex public policy problems and assist in the government decision-making process. You will have:

  • A sound understanding and knowledge of current public policy issues and financial management principles;
  • The capability to identify and deliver key strategic insights, counsel and policy to ensure decision making is made with the best possible advice, with a high degree of innovation and accountability;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, along with strong interpersonal skills and relationship building skills that allow you to work with and influence a variety of stakeholders;
  • The ability to establish and achieve objectives, often under tight timelines, which may include working some evenings/weekends during peak busy periods; and,
  • The ability to deal with confidential or sensitive issues.

Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position would be acquired through completion of a graduate degree in fields related to public administration, finance, accounting, economics, or public policy along with related experience, or through undergraduate degree in those fields combined with several years of relevant progressive experience.
