In partnership with Computers for Success Canada (CFSC), and the Computers for Schools Plus Intern (CFSI) program, funded by the Government of Canada, the Vancouver Public Library (VPL) is excited to recruit for a three-month internship opportunity in the Digital Services Department. While working alongside experienced library staff to deliver excellent digital library services and programs to the public, interns will get the chance to develop the expertise and skills needed to succeed in the digital economy.

Interns will work from the Vancouver Public Library (Central Library) located at 350 West Georgia Street in Vancouver, BC. This temporary internship position will run from January 3, 2022 to March 31, 2022.

Internship Details

Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Digital Collections, the Digital Services (ePublishing) intern will collaborate with stakeholders cross the organization, particularly Digital Collections as well as Children’s and Teen Services staff, to plan, translate, and publish a digital version of VPL’s children’s picture book, The Reading Tree, to commemorate its 5th anniversary.

Written and developed by children’s librarians, The Reading Tree takes young children on a colourful journey through a forest filled with language and fun. Provided free to Vancouver families with young children at VPL branches across the city, The Reading Tree also includes a practical guide to incorporating talking, singing, playing, writing and reading into daily routines in fun, simple ways to build a strong foundation for early literacy.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Commitment to excellence in UX and accessible design;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital creation tools and digital publishing software;
  • Proficiency in web content management systems such as Drupal and or basic XHTML and CSS;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Microsoft Outlook;
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and deliver projects on time in a dynamic environment;
  • Attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Collaborative mindset and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written);
  • Desired post-secondary education or coursework in Applied Communications, Digital Publishing or a combination with relevant experience;
  • Hands on experience with eBook production (familiarity with reflowable and fixed-layout EPUB) an asset;
  • Familiarity with Audio editing also an asset (e.g. Audacity).

Eligibility

Eligible participants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be between the ages of 15 and 30 (inclusive) at the start of the internship;
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person who has been granted refugee status in Canada;
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Not currently receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.

About the Computers for Schools Plus Internship Program

The Computers for Schools Plus Intern (CFSI) program supports the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment and Skills Strategy. CFSI seeks to enhance the employability and marketability of youth through internships specifically targeted to develop expertise and skills needed to actively participate in the digital economy. Under CFSI eligible youth are given valuable work experience through internships targeted to develop and enhance advanced digital skills. CFSI helps young Canadians of diverse backgrounds and genders gain work experience and develop a variety of advanced digital skills and important soft-skills such as project management, teamwork, and communications.

(CFSC-OPEC) is a not-for-profit organization, established in 2005, supporting the impacts of the Government of Canada’s digital inclusion and economic development programs. CFSC-OPEC’s services stand in four pillars - marketing and communications, partnership development, strategic planning, and project management.

Employment Type: Paid Internship (3 months)
Salary: $32.23 per hour
Work Schedule: 35 hours/week (full-time). May include some evening and weekend work.
