Knowledge Management Branch (KMB) is a corporate, service-driven unit responsible for the stewardship of environmental knowledge that supports natural resource management, and effective and integrated decision making. We provide information and knowledge assets and reports through five main functions and outcomes: Data, Information and Knowledge Acquisition and Management - Relevant, comprehensive and timely scientific data and information assets are acquired, managed and maintained; Methods, Standards and Protocols - The quality, consistency, comparability, reliability and applicability of data and information holdings are increased; Meaning Making - Data and information from multiple sources are linked, integrated and synthesized to create knowledge; Partnering and Collaboration - Partnerships and collaboration enhances learning and increase the capacity to acquire data and information assets and create knowledge; and, Information and Knowledge Access - Scientific data, information and knowledge are more accessible and usable.

Ecosystems Information Section is responsible for information services regarding the collection, standardization, management and distribution of a variety of provincial ecosystem data and information for the Natural Resource Sector. This includes fish and wildlife inventory and habitat information, fish passage, terrestrial ecosystems, soils, and terrain information. In addition, the section maintains Ministry of Environment websites, supports designation of Wildlife Habitat Areas and Ungulate Winter Range, and provides Fish and Wildlife inventory and information support from specialists embedded in regional offices.

Reporting to the Director of the Ecosystem Information Section, the Resource Information Specialist is responsible for supporting clients on matters related to fish and wildlife inventory and habitat information, fish passage, terrestrial ecosystems, soils, and terrain information. This position acts as a technical authority for integrated inventory and decision support projects, providing expertise on the collection, capture and application of aquatic and terrestrial information, including any associated data limitations and risks. Acting on behalf of the provincial data custodian, and in support of Open Data and Information policy and initiatives, this position provides critical regionally focused natural resource decision-making support through the capture, storage and dissemination of fish, wildlife and ecosystems information.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education, experience and professional designation requirement as outlined below:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences or natural resource conservation/management, including terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, conservation biology, fish or wildlife management and biodiversity and three (3) years of *related experience, including working in a complex natural resource management area.
  • Other relevant combinations of education, related experience and/or training may be considered that meets the criteria for registration as a Professional Biologist.
  • Registration as Professional Biologist (RPBio)with the College of Applied Biology of BC or, eligible to become a Professional Biologist within 6 months of appointment of commencing the position.
  • Related experience must include but is not limited to the following:
  • Experience in fish, wildlife and ecosystems inventory for the purposes of documenting distribution and quantifying abundance.
  • Experience in the management of complex digital fish, wildlife and ecosystems information and the use of analytical tools, including GIS for portraying and interpreting the information.
  • Experience in the application of fish, wildlife and ecosystem related information in land use or management initiatives.
  • Considerable demonstrated experience in dealing with public and private sector officials, professionals, contractors, and interest groups with conflicting interests and expectations.
Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Experience in mapping habitats in meaningful units for various fish, wildlife and ecosystems species, and in interpreting their relative quality for use by various species.
  • Experience programming and scripting (e.g. R, SAS, SQL, Python, and/or related systems and languages) for the purposes of data management, statistical analysis, data visualization, and scientific communication.
  • Experience in client support, end-user training, extension and outreach.
  • Experience interpreting and applying natural resource management legislation and policy.

Please include your registration number with the College of Applied Biology (CAB) within your application, as you must be registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with CAB. If you are not yet registered with the CAB, please explain how you are immediately eligible (i.e. currently a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) member in good standing in another Canadian jurisdiction and can immediately transfer to the CAB).
