A Day in the Life of an Accounting Manager/Assistant Controller at RWC!

Be part of designing your community! From the bustling downtown core all the way to Northern British Columbia you will be championing accounting processes at our head office. Our previous and current locations include Amazon HQ, YVR Airport, University of British Columbia, Parq Casino, Emily Carr University, Willowbrook mall, Royal Columbian Hospital, Saint Paul’s Hospital and much more! The Accounting Manager/Assistant Controllerplays a crucial role in undertaking all aspects of financial management and championing development of internal control policies and procedures. You will be encouraging staff to always put their best foot forward ensuring quality control over financial transactions and reporting.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and leadership to the accounting team by overseeing day to day and monthly processes: month-end, receivables, payables, payroll, review engagement, tax and T4 filings.
  • Spearhead external the year end review including the preparation of various year end schedules, accruals, and analysis as needed.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, including variance analysis to guide effective decision-making and assist with the cash flow forecasting process.
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations including balance sheet accounts and payroll to post adjusting journal entries as required.
  • Prepare and ensure accuracy of related-company billings and reconciliation of accounts.
  • Assist the CFO/Controller in the development and implementation of the best financial and budgetary practices, and ensure constant monitoring and updating of financial systems, policies, and processes.
  • Maintain fixed assets, deferred revenue, and other continuity schedules.
  • Assist and oversee payroll functions (provide support to payroll team)
  • Assist and oversee monthly progress billings (AR invoicing)
  • Project reconciliations
  • Understanding of payroll remittances and labour regulations (i.e. WCB)
  • Identify efficiencies and opportunities for cost reductions across the business.
  • Recommend benchmarks that will be used to measure the company’s performance.
  • Prepare all supporting information for authorized groups such as the Canadian Revenue Agency and the Worker’s Compensation Board.
  • Support interactions with key relationships, including advisors, customers, vendors and bankers.
  • Ensure that all statutory requirements of the organization are met including Withholding Payments (CPP, EI), Income Tax, WCB and Goods and Services Tax.
  • Assist in preparing financial statements and management discussion analysis report.
  • Update financial statements at month end including rolling trial balance and budget.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve requests from operational teams by adhering to accounting and business policies.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive responsibility and experience in an accounting and finance environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and CPA Designation.
  • Strong accounting technical knowledge in all areas of ASPE and consolidation.
  • Understanding of Construction Accounting a bonus
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and taking on new projects.
  • Advanced computer and Microsoft Excel skills.
    • Ability to quickly understand new ERP systems
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and managerial skills.
  • Analytical thinker and ability to readily grasp new concepts.
