Community :KELOWNA
Facility :KELOWNA GENERAL HOSPITAL
Status :CASUAL

Position Summary

Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) is seeking to expand its Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) Team and is inviting applications from SLPs with interest in Casual employment within an Acute Care Inpatient/Outpatient setting.

Casual employment means work requirements can vary between Zero and 37.5 hours per week. Casual SLPs may work up to full time hours. Shifts will include a mix of Monday to Friday Days where some shifts will be pre booked and some will be short notice.

What You Will Work On:
Acute Care communication and swallowing with inpatient/outpatient patients. SLPs work directly with clients and/or with their caregivers or other persons who regularly interact with them for the purpose of creating environments that promote optimal communication.

Areas covered are ICU, general surgical, neurosurgical, medical, rehab, stroke unit, trauma, and psychiatry. Patient populations include stroke, trauma, TBI, dementia, degenerative neurological disorders, respiratory, critical care, head and neck cancer.

How You Will Create Impact:
SLPs collaborate with other members of the multi-disciplinary team to add to patient care, and they offer in-services to nursing staff and rehab colleagues. We are part of projects such as nursing skills fairs, post-extubation swallow screens, and stroke and trauma team orientations.

How We Will Help You Grow:
Education (formal and informal) and mentorship to obtain advanced competencies as they are a huge benefit to the role. Our hospital offers opportunities for stretch projects or assignments.

As per union contract, staff may apply for up to $600 through the employer. Often there are additional education opportunities throughout the year (e.g. webinars on trachs and swallowing; communication and dementia).

Who We Are Looking For:
Team members who are flexible, open to feedback and ask questions. SLPs with any of the advanced competencies (MBS, FEES, trachs, voice restoration).
