We’re on the hunt for a Flight Dynamics Systems Engineer at the MDA Control Centre, Canadian Space Agency Headquarters, in St Hubert, QC.

MDA Geospatial Services is strengthening the satellite operations and development team in St Hubert, Q.C. They currently operate Radarsat-2, the Radarsat Constellation Mission (RCM), and participate in the development of future radar satellite missions. Radarsat-2 is a Canadian commercial radar satellite that provides high-resolution earth observation imagery to customers around the world. RCM is a constellation of three SAR satellites that provide imagery for Government of Canada users.

Within MDA satellite operations in St Hubert, the Flight Dynamics team is responsible for all spacecraft navigation activities. This includes orbit determination, orbit control, and collision avoidance. As such, the Flight Dynamics Systems Engineer must have strong knowledge of orbit mechanics theory as well as demonstrated skills in algorithm development and implementation. Knowledge of spacecraft systems, especially propulsion, GPS, and attitude control systems, is also important for this role. Members of the flight dynamics team are an integral part of the larger satellite operations group, and their role encompasses real-time activities, short-term investigations and trouble-shooting, medium-term software development, as well as long-term analysis and studies. These activities pertain to both the spacecraft and the supporting ground system.

The candidate should have excellent organizational, leadership, and communications skills as well as a strong sense of real-time operations management. The candidate should have the ability to work independently with little supervision, as well as part of a team.

Teamwork skills and a positive attitude are essential for building productive working relationships in a satellite operation environment

Primary Responsibilities
  • Monitor navigation activities daily for multiple satellites, and respond in real-time when problems arise (on-call typically one week out of four)
  • Plan station-keeping or collision avoidance maneuvers as required
  • Develop algorithms for improving orbit determination or orbit control processes
  • Monitor daily collision risks for all satellites and recommend when action is required
  • Trouble-shoot problems with ground software or space hardware related to navigation
  • Develop and update in-house navigation software to address bugs or add new features
  • Be actively aware of all satellite and ground system components that rely on or contribute to navigation
  • Review spacecraft telemetry as required
  • Contribute to systems engineering effort across the entire operations team
  • Reporting on navigation performance monthly and quarterly
Qualifications
  • Degree or advanced degree in numerate discipline, preferably in the areas of aerospace, mechanical, electric engineering or physics
  • At least 3 years experience in a space systems development or operations environment
  • Working knowledge of orbital mechanics theory
  • Ability to develop and modify orbit modeling software
  • Experience with orbit modelling tools such as STK or Orekit
  • Experience with orbit determination tools such as ODTK or Orekit
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Matlab and Python
  • Software development experience in Java preferred, but other languages such as C, C++ will be considered as well
  • Demonstrated organizational skills; capable of managing priorities, initiating activities, developing execution plans, and executing schedule with the agility to work in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and as part of a dynamic team
  • Demonstrated ability to react in a fast paced environment to a variety of tasks; sometimes outside of one’s primary domain of responsibility
  • Good verbal and written communication skills; Working language is in English
  • Willingness to be “on-call” to support anomaly decision and resolution process, if needed outside regular working hours
  • Passion for innovation a welcomed asset
  • The candidate must be able to qualify for a Canadian Secret level clearance
