Under the general direction of the Coordinator, Desktop & Mobility Services, the Senior Rugged and Mobile Support Specialist is responsible for the effective administration, operation and on-going maintenance of cellular networking, rugged laptops, mobile devices, printers and peripherals used within Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. The Senior Rugged and Mobile Support Specialist provides system or technical direction and administration of computer hardware and software, and is instrumental in resolving any operational difficulties in the day-to-day functions of the systems.

As theSenior Rugged and Mobile Support Specialist,you will:

  • Maintain and support the services and technologies provided by the Desktop & Mobility Services team, in association with other departmental technical groups.
  • Plan and implement the installation, sustainment and disposal of new information systems and technologies.
  • Monitor and prioritize assignments for junior staff.
  • Maintain accurate and timely information within the department’s Incident Management system.
  • Lead and/or participates in projects pertaining to new Rugged and Mobile technologies and hardware.
  • Perform other related duties consistent with the classification, as required.

Your education and qualifications include:

  • Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or a directly related field, or a reasonable equivalent in training and experience.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ related work experience in a multi-user environment.
  • Experience with Active Directory, Microsoft Office, Windows Operating Systems (Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 10) required.
  • Experience with connectivity and techniques for management and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Windows-based operating system software, hardware and techniques for deployment, management and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Apple mobile device (iPhone, iPad) software, hardware and techniques for deployment, management and troubleshooting.
  • Experience supporting rugged devices such as Panasonic Toughbooks would be an asset.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to plan, organize, analyze problems, develop and recommend solutions with minimum supervision.
  • Well-developed ability to provide quality customer service.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to work outside regular hours.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate system logs and troubleshoot problems.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Full Driver’s License.
  • Ability to acquire within six (6) months of appointment working knowledge of the City and the WFPS’s:
    • Standards, directives, guidelines, protocols, policies, procedures, and practices relevant to this position’s responsibilities.
    • Familiarity with the specific systems and process in place within WFPS.

Conditions of employment:

  • The successful applicant must possess and maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada.
  • Prior to commencement of employment, the successful applicant will be required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination by providing a Government of Manitoba issued QR code and photo identification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Police Information Check (original copy) from the City of Winnipeg Police Service (RCMP or provincial equivalent), satisfactory to the employer.   • Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Full Driver’s License (or provincial equivalent), satisfactory to the employer. Documentation must not have any alcohol related charges / convictions. Provincial equivalents will be accepted, however, out of province applicants must show proof of having transferred their license to Manitoba prior to their first day of employment. Any infractions, offences or investigations occurring prior or after application submission must be reported to the WFPS.
  • Valid Driver Safety Rating Scale Statement (original copy) from the Manitoba Public Insurance (or provincial equivalent), satisfactory to the employer. Documentation must be no more than minus four (-4) on the Driver Safety Rating scale. Documentation must be current and have been completed within the previous thirty (30) days prior to date of employment. This document will be required from the successful candidate, at their expense.   • Willingness and ability to successfully complete additional training and/or certificates relevant to this position’s duties within specified timeframes, if requested by WFPS management, is a condition of employment.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended or varied hours. The hours of work are full-time – 8:30 am – 4:30 pm – Monday to Friday (35 hours / week).
  • The successful candidate must be physically capable of performing the duties of this position – including considerable standing, stooping, use of both hands, walking, bending, reaching, crawling, pulling, crouching, lifting, twisting, medium lifting of up to 50lbs.
  • Willingness and ability to travel within the City of Winnipeg.
