Job Summary:
This position is primarily responsible for supporting the business needs of the Government Relations (GR) team for CSA Standards. The team is located across Canada, including the Vice President in Toronto, and Managers in Toronto, Ottawa and Calgary, as well as other locations to be determined.
In order to provide support to GR activities, this role will involve conducting targeted research and analysis of relevant materials, preparing presentations as required, scanning various media to identify information relevant to the GR team’s strategic priorities, coordinating engagement events, coordinating social media interactions on behalf of the GR team in collaboration with the Marketing and Corporate Communications departments, coordinating document reviews with the Legal department, etc.
The position will monitor and analyze new legislative and/or regulatory changes that may impact CSA Standards. It will also be responsible for supporting the government relations needs of the Standards Directors, as determined by the Vice President.
Responsibilities:
  • Understand the CSA Group value proposition of business opportunities identified in the Government Relations strategic plan for Canada.
  • Monitor and provide appropriate counsel on impacts from key parliamentary activities, including but not limited to speeches from the throne, budgets, House, Senate and Legislature Committees, etc.
  • Work in conjunction with the Vice President, support the development of the Government Relations strategy.
  • Work closely with the GR team to support and provide useful information in preparation for meetings with government officials.
  • Also expected to work closely with other colleagues within the Standards organization, including Marketing, Corporate Communications and Legal.
  • Prepare background documents, such as briefs or executive summaries, that support meetings with government officials, including any presentations that may be required.
  • Monitor, analyze and track legislation/regulation at the federal, provincial and municipal government levels, regarding initiatives that may impact CSA Standards (e.g. identify revenue opportunities; flag issues that might have a negative impact).
  • Develop and execute key engagement and communications activities in conjunction with Marketing and Corporate Communications (e.g. government relations webinar events, social media monitoring, organizing engagement events with government, etc.).
  • Help build a model of positive safety culture that recognizes and values the participation and contribution of all workers.
  • Identify potential unsafe conditions in the workplace, and report them appropriately.
  • Other duties as necessary to support the GR team.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • University degree in public policy, public relations, political science, communications, business, or a related field, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • At least 2-3 years of experience in a related role.
  • Previous experience with government or collaborating with government would be an asset.
  • Bilingual in English and French would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly adapt, and maintain focus with a high degree of accuracy while working with complex data under considerable deadline pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to think analytically and creatively, utilizing strategic skills.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written and presentation) – communicates effectively and professionally.
  • Strong research and writing skills.
  • Strong planning, organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Sound computer skills and experience, including web-based meeting platforms such as Teams, Zoom, BlueJeans, etc.
  • Strong coordination and event execution skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people at all levels, both internally and externally.
