Junior Data Engineer

Location: Remote, Canada

About the Role:

As a Junior Data Engineer within the data team, you will be responsible for development and support activities while working very closely with Madgex’s Technology teams. Good working knowledge of C# and SQL is expected, with experience with Amazon Web Services, DataOps, GraphQL and REST APIs, Databases, Data Lakes being desirable. This role will require you to work, with support from senior developers, on a wide range of projects interfacing with development teams, product managers, architects and senior management while constantly ensuring that your work is aligned with Madgex’s strategic direction. You will additionally be expected to provide backend support to the core services that cut across some of Madgex’s systems and products as a developer, as well as fill a development and support role for our Insights data product.

How you will make an impact:
  • Implement and support robust and secure data pipelines in AWS from a range of data sources.
  • Implement and support containerized, fault tolerant and scalable solutions.
  • Implement and support automated data pipelines.
  • Maintain, refactor, rework software code whenever identified as necessary by the software group and approved by the product team.
  • Work within the Data team to support our data products including Insights, our Elasticsearch powered analytics engine.
  • Learn and work with AWS Athena and Glue services for datalake creation in collaboration with other developers.
  • Be accountable for the performance, scalability, and accuracy of any implemented dashboard or report.
  • Practice high-quality development methods: unit tests writing, code review, code standards, test automation, integration technical documentation.

What we look for:
  • Have a degree in one of the following: Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Machine Learning, etc.
  • 1+ years of hands-on experience as a .Net developer in C#
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Git.
  • Familiar with integrating and querying data from multiple platforms/tools, for example: SQL sources, JSON, XML, CSV, REST APIs, Elasticsearch.

Desirable Experience
  • Experience working with Elasticsearch in a search and analytics capacity.
  • Knowledge of developing data applications using Python within data processing scopes.
  • Knowledge of database technologies including relational databases, non-tabular databases, and cloud data lake technologies.
  • Hands-on experience working with Amazon AWS services including ECS, Glue, Athena, S3, DynamoDB, EFS, SNS, SQS, Parameter Store, and more.
  • Experience with leveraging AWS CloudFormation to script Infrastructure-as-a-service.
  • Experience with containerizing and running applications in Docker.
  • Understanding of ELT and ETL approaches.
  • Understanding of technology methodologies including Agile (SCRUM), continuous integration/ continuous development, and automation.
  • Familiarity with JIRA and writing user stories, as well as Confluence for writing documentation.
