The Opportunity:


In so many ways, volunteers are the backbone of the YMCA and all it aims to accomplish in the community. The Volunteer Liaison works alongside existing YMCA staff to recruit, train and maintain the services of community volunteers who want to work with newcomer clients, and to raise awareness and acceptance of cultural diversity in the community. Main task areas include: recruiting and screening volunteers interested in working with the newcomer community; developing and delivering volunteer training materials; maintaining volunteer engagement; evaluating volunteer interests, outcomes and needs; assisting with the implementation of the annual Newcomer Connections Outreach plan.


This position is part of the Newcomer Connections team and reports to the Manager, Newcomer Support Services


Responsibilities:


This individual will work with existing YMCA staff to:

    • Work closely with the YMCA Volunteer Coordinator in the recruitment, training and retention of all volunteers;
    • Establish, develop and maintain relationships with local individuals, companies and community organizations who are interested in working with newcomer clients;
    • Promote volunteering opportunities across the Saint John region;
    • Organize, attend and present at volunteer recruitment events for Newcomer Connections;
    • Encourage and coordinate staff volunteerism and engagement with the newcomer community;
    • Manage the volunteer application process for those applying to work with newcomers;
    • Ensure volunteer screening processes are in place and closely followed;
    • Complete all reference checks and obtain a Criminal Record and Social Development check for each community volunteer;
    • Create and maintain job descriptions for community volunteers;
    • Work with fellow YMCA staff to develop and deliver volunteer training;
    • Liaise with the Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) team to connect newly-arrived Government-Assisted Refugees with “First Friend” volunteers;
    • Liaise with the Client Intake Worker to determine other client needs that could be met with volunteer supports;
    • Ensure follow-up and program evaluations are completed with volunteers on a regular basis;
    • Develop and monitor measurement tools to evaluate volunteer engagement, outcomes and needs on a regular basis;
    • Identify and develop new volunteering opportunities for community members based on data and other needs assessments;
    • Collaborate with YMCA staff to plan and host annual Volunteer Recognition event(s);
    • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records on volunteers;
    • Work with other YMCA staff to implement volunteer activities;
    • Input and maintain timely, accurate client records in iCARE, the CRM database and elsewhere as directed by the GM of Newcomer Connections;
    • Provide information as required for internal/external reports, proposals, grants, etc.;
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications:


  • A Bachelor’s Degree, Community College diploma or similar from an accredited institution;
  • Must be fluent in English, fluency in French is considered an asset;
  • Heightened sensitivity to the needs of our immigrant community;
  • Experience in a cross-cultural environment;
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills;
  • Exceptional organizational and inter-personal skills;
  • Demonstrated success in building cross-sector relationships;
  • Experience as a volunteer;
  • Computer literate (Microsoft 365 applications, Email, CRM);
  • Ability to work flexible hours
