River Forecast Technician
Scientific Technical Officer – Resource R24

This position is located in Victoria however a flexible work arrangement may be available.
This is a temporary opportunity until March 31, 2022.

The Division leads in the sustainable management of the province’s natural resources so that BC’s natural heritage is preserved for years to come. Water is one of these natural resources.

The Water Management Branch is accountable for operational delivery of provincial water programs including managing and regulating the allocation of water resources, ensuring safe and reliable community water supplies; and protecting public health and safety through River Forecast Centre operations, flood hazard management, regulation of dikes and dams, and supporting emergency response.

Working in the River Forecast Centre (RFC) this unique position provides expertise in compiling, analyzing, and presenting snow, climate and river discharge data for the diverse geography and changing climate of British Columbia for use in the evaluation of provincial stream flow conditions and flood risk consistent with the BC Flood Response and Drought Response Plans for public safety and community well-being.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education, experience and professional designation requirement as outlined below:

  • Degree(s) in Science or Applied Science with an emphasis in hydrology.
  • Demonstrated related experience in British Columbia in hydrology, climatology and water resource management.
  • Extensive experience with data management.
  • Experience with analysis and interpretation of hydrology and climate data from a variety of sources.
  • Experience in preparing clear and concise technical reports with good written and verbal communication skills.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following experience:

  • Experience with and sound knowledge of complex statistical analysis techniques including multivariate analyses.
  • Experience with and sound knowledge of computer programming and statistical packages, Microsoft (MS) Office software, especially MS Excel, and geographic information system software.

Willingness Statements:

  • Willing to be based in Victoria
  • Willing to be on-call and work extended hours during critical periods, including nights and weekends.
