Travel to Iqaluit, Canada’s Northernmost Capital


Ultrasonographers
are needed for travel/deployment assignments throughout Nunavut, providing a range of ultrasound expertise in all hospital departments.

The scope of this position provides Ultrasonography on site and may provide travelling services. All ultrasounds from the Baffin Region are processed and filed in the Diagnostic Imaging Department, with original reports filed in the Health Records Office.

This position impacts the excellence of patient care, treatment, and diagnosis the health care team provides. These services are provided Monday to Friday within departmental hours. Services required after regular working hours and during the weekends are covered on an “on-call” (standby) basis shared by the staff Technologists.

Reporting to the Manager, Diagnostic Imaging, the Ultrasonographer is part of a team that provides services to the General Hospital and Territory. The incumbent utilizes ultrasound equipment to independently produce and interpret high-quality sonographic images as required by the off-site Radiologist to complete accurate diagnosis of patients.

We are looking for individuals who can travel/deploy for the Summer (or longer).
Evening, Overnight, and Weekend availability may be required.

CONTEXTUAL KNOWLEDGE

  • Theories, principles, and practices required to perform and interpret detailed ultrasound examinations in the following areas: adult and pediatric neck, abdomen, pelvis, scrotum, deep leg vein, breasts, and the pregnant abdomen, which includes the developing fetus (spine, hips, cranial).
  • Theories, principles, and practices of ultrasound physic to create and interpret images produced.
  • Advanced knowledge of internal anatomy and physiology of all areas to be examined sonographically and seek out and recognize pathological changes of internal anatomy. This includes knowledge of and understanding pathologies that may affect internal structures.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and the ability to exercise such precautions when lifting and moving heavy patients and equipment.
  • Theories, principles and practice of Quality Control and an ability to conduct QC measures on all ultrasound equipment.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to the Canadian Council of Hospital Accreditation (CCHA) applicable accreditation standards and applicable legislation, policies and procedures, including Sonography Canada’s Standards of Practice Principles.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • An ability to effectively use ultrasound equipment to produce and interpret complex quality images for diagnosis of the patient by the Radiologist based on the clinical information provided by the referring physician.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills include getting one’s point across to medical and non-medical individuals.
  • Controls emotions and continues to talk or act calmly.
  • An ability to see self as a functional specialist and an ability to make things happen. This includes an ability to state confidence in own judgement explicitly.
  • An ability to take apart problems into pieces and link those pieces together with single links (i.e., A leads to B leads to C).
  • An ability to use simple rules (“rules of thumb”), common sense and experience to identify problems. This includes recognizing when a current situation is the same as a past one.
  • An ability to answer questions as a functional expert when asked. This includes telling people about their current understanding of technical issues.

REQUIREMENTS

  • The successful completion of an accredited sonography program.
  • Current registration with Sonography Canada.
  • Two years of sonography experience.
  • Continuing Education is required to maintain the Sonography Canada registration and stay current with the ever-changing technology (40 credits of continuing sonography education and/or relevant practice education credits must be completed every three (3) years).
  • The ability to communicate in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages is an asset.

All Health providers must be able to acquire within a reasonable time frame and remain current with the following training and certifications.

  • WHMIS
  • CPR

Criminal records and vulnerable sector checks will be required as a highly sensitive position.
