Overall Responsibility
- Provide technical support to R&D projects by performing various metallographic analysis
- Characterize steel defects made during manufacture
- Conduct failure analysis of steel that failed in application
- Report results of analysis in memos and technical reports
- Support other R&D technical work as required
- Programme Leader – Metallurgical Technical Investigations (MTI)
- Work Direction from MTI clients (e.g. Researchers leading projects, Business Units, Technical Service Managers)
- Fulfill the requirements and responsibilities of the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Health & Safety Program.
- Carry-out various metallographic tests and analysis. Examples include:
- Analysis of grain structure and steel phases using optical and scanning electron microscopy
- Microhardness testing
- Cross-sectioning metallic defects
- Optical and scanning electron microscopy
- Carry-out failure investigations on steel samples that failed in application or have manufacturing defects
- Maintain up to date knowledge in equipment and testing procedures.
- Report findings of tests in memos and technical reports
- Working knowledge of steel: metallography, microstructure, defects, and mechanical properties
- Familiarity with standard metallography techniques such as cross-sectioning, mounting, polishing, etching, optical microscopy
- Experience with some steel metallurgical defects and failure analysis.
- Familiarity with various ASTM testing methods for measuring metallographic features
- Familiarity with standard automotive and construction steel grades and coatings.
- Experience in reporting the outcome of defect and failure analysis investigations.
- Skills to use computer software to compile data, perform analysis and report findings.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering is required
- 1 to 3 years of materials experience is an asset
- Other degrees or qualifications that aid flexibility in an R&D lab will be considered
- Lab and office environment with some work in the steel plant.
- This position is currently eligible for remote work due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In the future, this position may be eligible to work remote on an ad hoc or part time basis.
- Straight days, Monday to Friday. When required, candidate will work outside of these normal hours (plant trials, specialized testing to meet project deadlines, etc.).
