Riverdale is looking for a Senior Accountant to join our finance team located at our Kitchener office.

The Senior Accountant will report directly to the Controller and will be responsible for our monthly financial reporting process. Additionally, this role involves ad-hoc financial analysis, reviewing payroll, and special projects as assigned by the Controller.

Job Duties:

Accounting

  • Lead month end and year end closing process. Ensure the month end and year end are completed error free and on schedule.
  • Prepare and post journal entries, review journal entries prepared by team members. Ensure all journal entries are supported.
  • Review trial balance for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare balance sheet reconciliations including updating working paper files, review reconciliation completed by team members.
  • Preparation of monthly financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cashflow and departmental statements) including variance analysis.
  • Assist in the design and preparation of forecasts and budgets.
  • Review and approve weekly payroll to ensure compliance with company policies, rate cards, and payroll legislation. Our Payroll Accountant is responsible for entering payroll into our system.
  • Review and approve accounts payable invoice coding for accuracy. Our bookkeeper is responsible for entering payables into our system.
  • Manage the corporate credit card process through the bank’s portal.
  • Alongside our Controller, responsible for the management, and accuracy of Payroll and Invoicing Rulebooks, including invoicing-related lookup tables in MERLIN (i.e. invoicing rules)
  • Act as a main point of contact for QuickBooks issues and challenges.

Financial Analysis & Reporting

  • Prepare, analyze, and present monthly reporting package, with a focus on clearly outlining drivers of operating performance
  • On a monthly basis update and review our detailed Excel financial model
  • Preparation of internal financial reports, forecasts, and analysis
  • Review weekly bank reconciliation and AR aging schedules for completeness and accuracy
  • Accurately prepare weekly reports - cashflow forecast, and operating KPI report

General

  • Ability to assist and support all aspects of the accounting process
  • Assist with preparation for any audits or independent reviews
  • Exert care and control over assets and records
  • Routinely review existing processes and workflows, with a goal to make more efficient as measured by: (a) increased accuracy, (b) time savings, (c) better documentation, (d) increased automation, (e) better controlled and/or (f) creating more redundancy (cross training)
  • Maintain an accurate and complete trail of supporting documentation for all financial and bookkeeping activities, including maintaining an up-to-date, complete and systematic filing system
  • Guide and mentor team members and other staff by answering questions and anticipating future challenges
  • Act as backup to the bookkeeper
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • CPA designation or successful completion of CFE with a minimum of 2 years experience in a similar role
  • Thorough understanding of accounting principles, procedures and software with the ability to analyze complex financial records and reports
  • Experience with QuickBooks, Sage, or similar accounting software
  • Experience leading the month-end process with a thorough understanding of requirements for complete and accurate account reconciliations
  • Experienced preparing, analyzing and presenting monthly reporting packages
  • Experienced producing multiple Excel spreadsheet using pivot tables and complex formulas such as IF, SUMIF, INDEX, MATCH
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, while maintaining a professional and mature demeanor
  • Comfortable working independently and confident raising concerns with team members/senior leadership teams as needed to resolve issues
  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
