Summary

The Research Chemist is responsible for making detailed observations, analyzing data, and interpreting results. The Research Chemist shall prepare technical reports, summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses. The incumbent is required to maintain familiarity with current scientific literature and contribute to the process of the project(s), as well as investigate, create, and develop new methods and technologies for project advancement. This individual will also be responsible for identifying patentable inventions and collaborating with marketing and business management on the selection of market and product variant strategic ingredients.

Reports to:Senior Laboratory Manager

Direct Reports:None

Internal Customers:Operations, Engineering

External Customers:External clients (typically indirectly via Senior Laboratory Manager)


Key Responsibilities:

  • Record, compile, interpret results, and draw conclusions based on sound, scientific analysis to present to management.
  • Demonstrate ability to critically identify experimental abnormalities and provide suggestions for new method development and process improvement.
  • Independently plan, design and conduct experiments as requested to support business priorities and project goals.
  • Conduct early feasibility assessments on new technologies/methodologies and conduct literature research and laboratory experimentation to generate and compile necessary data. Problem solve and troubleshoot any issues that arise with experimental setups and analyses.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot and operate laboratory equipment (i.e. pH meter, balances, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, GC, HPLC, FTIR, etc.) to minimize measurement error and ensure testing reproducibility.
  • Establish a collaborative culture within the team that builds solid relationships across cross-functional teams.
  • Write reports and prepare presentations, as required, for internal/external parties.
  • Represent own technology and data in group and project meetings within R&D as well as within internal and external project team environment.
  • Proactively work within a team of Quality Control and Research & Development personnel to assist in the implementation of duties.
  • Work with Process Engineers to set-up procedures for scale-up.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry and common chemical transformations, and characterization techniques.
  • Ability to plan and carry out medium and long term research projects.
  • Ability to conduct multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Confident working alone and with others.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook).
  • Ability to work safely and follow all safety mandates and Standard Operating Procedures in a laboratory setting.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to follow detail orientated procedures.
  • Proactive problem solving and critical interpretation of results.

Experience/Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry required. M.Sc. or Ph.D. preferred.
  • Experience in Biotechnology sector considered an asset.
  • Experience with analytical techniques including HPLC, GC-FID, GC-MS considered an asset.
  • Significant experience in organic and inorganic synthesis, characterization and separations considered an asset.
  • Technical writing skills in English are required.

Working Conditions

  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Overtime as required.
  • Weekend work may be required.
  • May be exposed to hazards associated with manufacturing.
  • May be required to use PPE.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Standing and sitting for long periods.
