To support us on our journey, Sinai Health System is looking for a Registered Nurse to support our Dentistry Department at our Mount Sinai Hospital Campus which is a busy multidisciplinary Ambulatory Clinic, fully accredited with (CDAC) and is affiliated with the University of Toronto. It is an academic centre with graduate specialty residents, undergraduate dental students, as well as hospital dental residents. The Registered Nurse will support and contribute to patient care providing multi-disciplinary dental/oral surgery treatment. Patient population includes medically complex patients and adults with disabilities.

Job Summary:

  • The Department of Dentistry is a busy multidisciplinary Ambulatory Clinic, fully accredited with (CDAC) and is affiliated with the University of Toronto. It is an academic centre with graduate specialty residents, undergraduate dental students, as well as hospital dental residents.
  • Support and contributes to patient care providing multi-disciplinary dental/oral surgery treatment. Patient population includes medically complex patients and adults with disabilities.
  • Provides nursing services, chair-side dental assisting and/or support for all aspects of dental treatment within an ambulatory clinic setting to help the team deliver the most efficient, effective, quality care possible in a safe setting
  • Perform a variety of nursing duties required to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of Clinic operations. This includes outpatient oral and maxillofacial surgery/general dentistry, both routine and complex procedures under local anesthesia, conscious and deep sedation.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and attend to the care of patients; Review charts/medical histories/medication changes; adjust schedules as required.
  • Patient assessment for surgery and discharge
  • Medication inventory and narcotic control
  • Dispense Medication as prescribed by dentist. Intravenous starts/Administer intravenous medications and fluids as directed by Surgeon.
  • Maintain required records as per RCDSO guidelines.
  • Monitor patient’s vitals; pre-operative, operative and post-operative
  • Assist in the provision of sedation by acting as an anesthetic assistant under direct supervision.
  • Provide continuous patient assessment pre-operative; during conscious or deep sedation and postoperative. Recoding and monitoring of vital signs, assessing, and maintaining patient airways.
  • Assist with Surgical Procedures / general Dental Assisting with Treatment provided by staff dentists, dental residents, dental students, or other persons administering treatment in the Department of Dentistry
  • Preparation for dental/surgical procedures. Prepare and organize the dental operatories with appropriate dental and surgery instruments, equipment, and materials.
  • Post-operative instructions; post-operative wound care education
  • Follow-up postoperative phone call assessment as required.
  • Respond to medical emergencies within the Clinic
  • Reprocessing, packaging, sterilizing and maintenance of instruments and equipment, in accordance with RCDSO, departmental and hospital infection control policies and standards of practice.
  • Maintain RCDSO (Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario) Standard Practice on the Use of Sedation and General Anesthesia in Dental Practice)
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new skills to treat medically compromised patients and persons with disabilities.
  • Participate in in-service education programs to staff and residents to include sterile procedures and set-up/ infection control/assisting techniques.
  • Participates in Daily/Weekly/Monthly Quality Assurance duties, including recording daily, weekly, monthly, and annually quality assurance records
  • Ordering/Maintaining In-hospital sundries and supplies; dental implant and graft material supplies and consignments
  • Able to work in a busy environment
  • Superior interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with other members of the dental team
Job Requirements
  • Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Experience and knowledge in Oral Surgery / Dentistry essential
  • Demonstrates sound knowledge base and skill in pre and post procedural assessment
  • Knowledge of RCDSO (Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario) Standards of Practice Guidelines
  • Knowledge of Sterile set-up for procedures.
  • A sound knowledge base and demonstrated skill in pre and post procedural assessment
  • Current BCLS Certification/ ACLS required
  • Certified in IV Insertion and Medication administration; experience in I.V. meds / I.V. insertion and maintenance
  • HARP certified- required within the first year
  • Dental and Oral Surgery experience within a dental clinic/office setting;
  • Sound knowledge and experience with dental procedures including implants / grafting procedures/materials
  • Demonstrates excellent critical thinking, decision making and problem solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Commitment to patient and family centred care.
  • Proven ability to manage a varied workload.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively function as a “team” member both intra and inter-departmentally and able to establish excellent working relationships with the Clinical Staff.
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history.
  • Previous experience in a Oral Surgery / Dental Anesthesia practice, Hospital based dental office preferred
  • Problem-solving/critical thinking skills-must be independent and able to handle tasks and challenges
