Position Description


Calling aspiring Medical Lab Technologists! Are you looking to grow your career in Laboratory Medicine while completing the CMLTO registration process? The Hospital for Sick Children is seeking individuals with a desire to kickstart their careers to join us as Non-Registered Technologists.

The Non-Registered Technologist performs and is responsible for a variety of laboratory tests and procedures and acts in accordance with the mission, vision, values and goals of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) and those of the Hospital, under direct oversight of a CMLTO registered Medical Laboratory Technologist and/or Medical/Scientific staff. They will support a 24 hour / 7 days a week operations working all shifts on a rotational basis including weekends and holidays as scheduled. The non-registered Medical Lab Technologist will work in the Clinical Molecular Diagnostics Laboratorywithin the Division Pathology.

The Division of Pathology and Clinical Molecular Diagnostics at the Hospital of Sick children combines the analysis of cellular and molecular abnormalities underlying disease processes to deliver timely and life-changing diagnostic results. The Clinical Molecular Diagnostics lab is at the forefront of cancer diagnostics, employing advanced methods including next-generation sequencing and methylation arrays to identify genetic and epigenetic changes that drive patients’ cancers. These tests are critical for providing accurate diagnoses and selection of the most effective treatments. As a valued team member, you will play a critical role in the Division’s efforts to improve patient outcomes using precision oncology.

Here’s What You’ll Get To Do

  • Strictly follow standard operating procedures
  • Rotate through all areas of the laboratory as assigned
  • Prioritizes own workload to ensure efficiency and timely results.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.
  • Prepare and issue of samples/product/specimen
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and records of testing
  • Practice and perform a variety of laboratory tests and procedures with accurately and precisely within defined time expectations (TATs)
  • Recognize failure, troubleshoot, take remedial action, and document action, within their scope of practice, as required
  • Report failures, issues & action taken to immediate supervisor
  • Assess results against diagnosis to ensure relevant results correspond with known patient data, as appropriate
  • Recognize abnormal and critical results, and takes appropriate actions according to the established SOP, as required.
  • Follow inventory control system and communicate status to ensure availability of adequate reagents and supplies
  • Participate in the development, implementation and support of the policies, processes and procedures within the Quality System to support the effective operation of DPLM
  • Follow health and safety procedures as per DPLM and Hospital guidelines.
  • Understands the practice and theory of quality control (discipline specific) in Laboratory Medicine.
  • Perform quality control and documents control results
  • Review and monitor daily QC results
  • Recognize unusual quality control results, take remedial action and document outcome
  • Report ongoing or unresolved QC issues to immediate supervisor

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • Bachelor of Science and/or diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology with Genetics background.
  • Bachelor of Science MLS or equivalent with Genetics background
  • Previous job-related experience required: Molecular Genetics Laboratory Technologist or technician experience an asset.
  • Demonstrated intent to become registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) as a Medical Lab Technologist (Genetics)
  • Experience with paediatrics is an asset
  • Solid computer skills
  • Relevant special technical skills
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated customer service orientation and ability to relate well to others
  • Strong organization skills and ability to work well under pressure and prioritize
  • Critical thinking skills, highly accurate
