National Director, Re-Manufacturing Operations

Role Description

Reporting to the Senior VP, Supply and Wholesale the National Director, Re-Manufacturing Operations is the leader of all Kal Tire re-manufacturing operations within Canada. The role provides strategic guidance for operations and supports the continued delivery of high-quality services by Kal Tire through our re-manufacturing and recycled products. With a focus on continuous improvement, the role supports the ongoing review of efficiency, innovation and safety for the division while maintaining alignment to the strategic objectives of the Company and to the Kal Tire AIMs.

With accountability for the operational success of the division – Bandag, OTR Retread, OTR Repair plants, KalCirkular Solutions, the role will set the operational vision, goals, and budget for the team as well as manage a team of Zone Managers who collectively achieve the annual goals for growth, service, profitability, safety, efficiency, and people development for all team members and operations.

The role will work collaboratively with the SVP and a variety of shared service functional leaders including Business Development, Finance and Supply Chain on providing re-manufacturing products and services in support of Kal Tire’s broader commercial business.

The location for this position is preferably in Vernon, BC. Alternatively, it can be anywhere across Ontario or British Columbia with the ability to travel for business.

Responsibilities

Operations & Operational Strategy

• Drives the achievement of strategic goals in collaboration with key leaders and shared service roles within the organization

• Working with a team of Zone and Plant Managers is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of 16 facilities across the country.

• In collaboration with the Kal Tire Safety team and VP Safety, develops, oversees, and implements a highly effective Safety program which supports a culture of safety throughout the division; leads all operational safety initiatives and reporting

• Leads all capital projects and new plant integrations

• Supports system implementations and Business Process Optimization initiatives

• Oversees all production related activities (efficiency tools and processes, labour per unit comparisons and processes) and maximizes/balances capacity for all facilities. Is responsible for developing and reporting on all operational and people based key performance indicators.

• Ensures consistent quality and production processes, standards, and systems.

• Demonstrates leadership in testing new and innovative continuous improvement initiatives

• Works with the Director, Supply Finance on financial oversight of all operations, analyzes retread division results to identify areas of opportunity, KPI development and tracking.

• Oversees capital expenditures and budgets and ensures ROI targets are met.

• Oversees supplier relationships and finds opportunities to optimize price, service, and quality from suppliers. In conjunction with Supply Chain shared service resources sets inventory management targets and direction for the division.

• Oversees inventory management, product mix, casing, and stock turnover, ultimately ensuring the division has the products to support sales and profit targets.

• Partners with Kal Tire MTG on new growth initiatives and innovation in re-manufacturing.

• Develops an annual business plan, budget, and performance targets for the division in collaboration with Zone and Plant Managers

• Collaborates and supports customer facing Business Development, Sales, and Marketing teams to define the re-manufacturing value proposition and sell retread products and services to the internal business units (Stores, MTG) and to external customer groups.

• Ensures sales and service level commitments can be met across national locations and that pricing is appropriate given manufacturing costs.

Team Leadership

• Leads the 250-300 team members comprising re-manufacturing operations in an authentic manner consistent with broader Kal Tire values and AIMS

• Oversees the performance of a team of Zone Managers, coaching and mentoring all activities around zone performance and profitability.

• Develops and maintains a performance management and compensation structure for the division and ensures key people processes are being applied consistently and effectively.

• Leads Zone Manager communication and change management platforms; works closely with the team to achieve milestones and performance targets while maintaining a holistic view of performance within the division.

• Initiates leadership development activities within the division; mentors and guides leaders through the certification process and supports Career Trackers to achieve their annual goals.

• Supports all activities within the division to do with the full employment life cycle of a team members including but not limited to workforce planning, ongoing engagement and retention activities, progressive discipline, and performance management.

Work Experience

• Minimum 10 years of progressively senior business experience within manufacturing of a medium to large organization. Industrial manufacturing an asset.

• Minimum 5 years of experience leading senior teams across multiple locations that are geographically dispersed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Deep knowledge of manufacturing systems and operational practices.

• Demonstrated capabilities growing and fostering a culture of safety including operating within safety and quality systems, standards, and reporting.

• Demonstrated ability to be a champion of change, innovation and continuous improvement of plant operations and people-based teams.

• Business process optimization and experience working with implementing systems

• Proven ability to manage costs, efficiency, volume, and financial reporting for a decentralized business.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate with team members, peers, senior leaders, customers, and suppliers in a variety of platforms including verbal, written and presentation form.

• Demonstrates a high level of personal integrity and accountability which includes foreseeing potential issues and proactively dealing with them.

• Demonstrates a high level of self-awareness and an understanding of personal strengths and weaknesses; proactively seeks out development

Education

• Post graduate diploma or applicable business degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

• Must be able to travel frequently within Canada and (less frequently) Internationally.
