Background:


The cornerstone of the FCM Programs department is the Green Municipal Fund™ (GMF), a $1 billion permanent endowment from the Government of Canada. As a leading catalyst for innovation at the local level, GMF offers funding (loans and grants) and knowledge to local governments and their partners for sustainable municipal initiatives designed to support communities to improve air, water, soil quality and to protect the climate. Through GMF, municipalities have built better transportation assets; constructed efficient and resilient buildings; diverted waste from landfill; made previously unusable land available for development; and improved soil and water quality.

GMF also strengthens the capacity of Canadian municipalities to plan and invest in innovative, sustainable infrastructure, thereby saving millions of dollars for taxpayers and creating jobs, contributing to local economies. GMF shares the lessons and expertise gained from funded initiatives through skills-enhancement, training and knowledge-sharing activities including case studies, manuals and reports, webinars, the FCM Sustainable Communities Awards and the FCM Sustainable Communities Conference. These activities help other communities replicate the successes of GMF-funded projects, multiplying the benefits of those projects across the country.

Major Purpose:

Plans and implements marketing and promotional activities for Green Municipal Funds (GMF) products and services, which includes overseeing the Outreach team’s participation to trade shows, conferences and events, coordinating the production of advertising materials, planning budgets and monitoring expenditures. Proactively researches, identifies and recommends opportunities to maximize engagement of target audiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement outreach strategies to promote GMF and its programs, including identifying and recommending opportunities for participation in trade shows, conferences and events to ensure high visibility and maximize the engagement of municipal governments and partners.
  • Organises and produces webinars.
  • Ensure that all GMF staff is equipped with up-to-date promotional material and key messages to adequately represent GMF at events.
  • Implements promotional activities (events and promotional campaigns) to support GMF’s marketing and communications strategy.
  • Develops, monitors and reviews production of promotional materials, including presentations, call-outs, brochures and other online and print advertising; ensures quality and compliance with GMF and FCM design standards.
  • Keep updated the GMF approved project slides and Outreach templated presentations for all sectors.
  • Analyses event opportunities across Canada to determine which ones will generate greatest return on investment as well as negotiate sponsorship opportunities with key organizations.
  • Develops and monitors annual budgets related to events, graphic design and printing services, including reviewing monthly financial reports and recommending adjustments as required.
  • Budgets for travel and accommodation expenses and provides cost-benefit comparisons when necessary.
  • Collaborates with other GMF units to ensure coordinated and effective promotional activities, to keep up to date with information related to GMF offer, tools and knowledge products, and to disseminate information and contacts gathered from event participation.
  • From time to time, attend trade shows, conferences and events on behalf of the organization, to promote GMF and its programs.
  • Participates as required in cross-functional team project work for National Programs department or in FCM-wide initiatives.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Post-secondary education in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or related field.
  • Strong practical knowledge and experience in marketing communications or public relations ideally with a focus on municipal infrastructure and environmental trends and issues.
  • Two years practical experience in a forward-facing communication or marketing communications role including experience with producing printed and electronic promotional materials.
  • Familiarity with best practices and technical language related to marketing and graphic design.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong focus on customer service.
  • Strategic thinking skills combined with a proven capacity for hands-on technical work.
  • Strong organization skills related to coordinating a variety of activities and projects.
  • Analytical and versatile, able to learn quickly, prioritize effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong knowledge of business support processes and tools, computer business applications (Microsoft Office suite) and databases.
  • Understanding of the municipal context in Canada is a strong asset.

Language Requirements:

  • Bilingualism (French and English) is an asset for this position.

Other:

  • Required to travel to destinations across Canada two to three times each year to attend trade shows, conferences and events
