The University of New Brunswick Saint John welcomes applications for the position of Manager, Network Services with Information Services and Systems (ISS). This is a continuing full-time (36.25 hours per week) position with the APT employee group. The position is funded by the University Budget with a salary range of $51,082 - $66,406 per annum.

The Manager, Network Services is responsible for providing a stable, robust, and dependable multimedia and networked computing environment. Also maintain critical equipment that is located in various locations across UNBSJ.

Position summary:

  • Plan, design, install, maintain, and monitor the effective and continuous use of campus network servers and services.
  • Ensure that campus users have access to network resources: printing, network stored files, and internet access.
  • Maintain, configure, upgrade all network servers on the Saint John Campus.
  • Administer, configure, and maintain a variety of servers across the Saint John Campus.
  • Install and manage the network infrastructure which includes the firewall, site-to-site VPN units (Fortigate), and the internal core and edge switches (Juniper).
  • Maintain confidentiality of information and back-up/restore data stored on the network servers.
  • Ensure physical maintenance and safety of core hardware, including servers, routers, hubs, and switches that constitute the UNBSJ server and network infrastructure.
  • Using IBM’s Tivoli Storage Management back-up all servers and user data; restore user data, as requested.
  • Work closely with Fredericton campus Network and Server teams on a variety of shared resources and functions.
  • Ensure prompt resolution of issues related to network services.
  • Maintain a fully-functional isolated sandbox test environment for planning, testing and debugging changes/updates.
  • Work with Data Analyst to help troubleshoot problems that affect the network infrastructure.
  • Track issues and requests using FootPrints software.
  • Perform network services maintenance, support functions, and emergency support outside of regularly scheduled hours, as required.
  • Ensure that staff are trained/motivated. Maintain list of key responsibility areas that are reviewed/renewed annually.
  • Plan, recommend, and use department budgets, in close consultation with the Director. Perform administrative functions related to managing these budgets.
  • Maintain relevant industry/technical certifications (e.g., MCSE, Juniper, Fortigate).
  • Other duties as required.

Requirements/Skills:

  • Undergraduate degree in a technical field such as Computer Science or Engineering, or an equivalent amount of education, training, and experience.
  • Minimum of four or more years of experience working in network and server services.
  • Experience with wireless solutions, Extreme networks, Juniper, Fortigate, and Microsoft Windows 200x server operating systems required. Linux server operating systems and experience with firewalls required. MCSE Certification an asset.
  • Experience working in a post-secondary educational institution would be an asset.
  • Ability to interact and communicate with a diverse group of clients: senior management, faculty, staff, and students. Sensitivity to cultural differences and issues.
  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills, along with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with differing skill sets as well as autonomously. Ability to handle stress and interruptions.
  • Ability to work outside of regularly scheduled hours.
