Role Summary

The Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Nurse Specialist will serve as a key member of the Safehaven team. The IPAC Nurse Specialist will be responsible for advising, supporting, and facilitating the implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of Infection Prevention and Control policies, practices, and procedures. The IPAC Specialist will have an ongoing goal to minimize the risk of infectious diseases for clients, staff, and visitors to Safehaven.

Responsibilities :

  • Planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating the Infection Control Program through the development of policies and procedures, and designing/conducting education programs to control, reduce and/or prevent the spread of infection for patients, staff, volunteers’, patients’ families and visitors.
  • Collaborates with all departments and services to ensure compliance with applicable Infection Control legislation, guidelines and protocols.
  • Reviews, analysis and implements regulations, standards and/or guidelines of applicable government agencies and professional organizations, review of Best Practice Guidelines, OHA recommendations.
  • Remains on-call outside of normal working hours to ensure timely and effective response related to infection control issues.
  • Maintains a knowledge base of current IPAC information and best practices.
  • Ensures compliance with accreditation standards of practices.
  • Evaluation of products and procedures.

Surveillance

  • Conducts surveillance to monitor the effectiveness of prevention and control strategies and provides suggestions for improvements.
  • Prepare patient safety and quality reports for the Medical Advisory Committee, IPAC Committee, Risk Management, Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee, Balanced Score Card and managers monthly/quarterly/annually by gathering, trending and analyzing data.
  • Report all mandatory patient safety indicators, internally and externally.

Education

  • Developing, delivering and evaluating educational programs related to infection control for staff, patients, physicians, volunteers, students and visitors as appropriate.

Consultation

  • Provides expert knowledge and guidance in infection prevention and control and epidemiology.
  • Consult with healthcare providers, physicians, managers & directors throughout the Centre assisting them to identify and reduce infection risks.

Occupational Health

  • Assists the Department of Occupational Health and Safety in ensuring compliance with applicable infection control legislation, guidelines and protocols. This involves keeping abreast of changes, developing and implementing policies and procedures, consulting with managers to ensure they include infection control principles in their policies and procedures, provide consultation services to the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee as required.

Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or any regulated health care related degree OR Baccalaureate Degree in Microbiology OR Public Health
  • Basic Infection Prevention and Control course or must commit to completing course within one year of commencing employment
  • Current registration with regulatory college (if a regulated health care professional)
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC) or will obtain within 2 years
  • Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations under the Act for healthcare and residential facilities
  • Knowledge of WHMIS, Workers’ Safety & Insurance Act, Public Hospitals Act and Health Protection and Promotion Act
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Intermediate computer skills (Word, Excel)
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • 3 years related experience in Infection Prevention and Control or Public Health preferred
  • Evidence of satisfactory attendance record
  • An employee’s disciplinary record will be reviewed as part of the assessment of qualifications
