Investment Division Summer Intern - Manulife

Manulife’s Investment Division manages the Company’s General Account and, through Manulife Asset Management, manages assets for institutional clients and investment funds in key markets around the world.


The Investment Division manages a broad range of investments including public and private bonds, public and private equities, mortgages, real estate, oil and gas, infrastructure, timberland, farmland and asset allocation strategies. The Investment Division has a physical presence in key international financial centres, including Canada, the United States, Hong Kong, Japan, the United Kingdom, Australia, and throughout South East Asia.

The Power and Infrastructure team (within the Investment Division) is seeking two motivated individuals to fill the role of Summer Intern. One of the roles will be a Credit Analyst while the other role will be an ESG Analyst. Reporting to the VP Power and Infrastructure, the candidates will be accountable for assisting in the management of all aspects of a portfolio of debt investments. Specifics about the jobs include:

1) (a) Credit Analyst - Support Lending Officers in completion of quarterly / annual Investment reviews of public and private placement portfolio investments. (75%)

  • Working with senior staff, follow established report formats to analyze company performance, document risks and mitigants, developments and make appropriate risk rating recommendations.

  • Maintenance of annual reviews to minimize risk of credit loss for Manulife.

1) (b) ESG Analyst – Support Power and Infrastructure team in their assessment of the carbon intensity of individual investments within the portfolio (75%)

  • Working with senior staff, analyze publicly available information & management presentations to understand the ESG footprint of individual holdings

  • Assist team in developing internal ESG decision making tools

2) Assist with new transactions. (10%/0%)

3) Assist with the preparation of presentations for senior management. (10/20%)

4) Additional responsibilities and administrative duties, as assigned. (5%)

The ideal candidate will be a high caliber student in an undergraduate program working towards a Bachelor of Commerce degree.

Other attributes to include:

  • Experience with credit and industry analysis.

  • Strong understanding of financial statements, ratio analysis and excel modeling.

  • Highly developed communication, writing and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Willingness to undertake a range of duties in support of overall team goals.
