Applications are now being accepted for the following:
Indigenous Advocate (Job ID: 2035)
POSITION – 10 months, full time (7.5 hours per day, 190 days per year, following the 2021/22 school calendar) commencing as soon as possible. The successful candidate will provide advice and drive actions in four areas:
- Provide voice and perspective to staff and students regarding actions for reconciliation,
- advocate on behalf of Indigenous students and families division wide,
- facilitate cultural awareness opportunities within the division and
- support Indigenous student success.
Support for Indigenous initiatives and establishing relationships with our communities, families and surrounding Nations will be a significant part of this role.
This position involves:
- Meeting with school administration to support plans to engage with Indigenous families transitioning back to school following COVID disruptions
- Providing educational programming or projects to engage Indigenous students, in collaboration with Learning Consultants
- Working as a team with school and division administration and community to develop relationships and future partnerships
- Support for the Indigenous Advisory Council (including elders, students, community members and teachers), and Following their Voices schools
The successful candidate will have:
- Experience with and passion for sharing traditional knowledge and teachings
- Experience with anti-racist/anti oppressive theory is an asset
- Organizational skills, good communication skills and comfortable using some technology
- Passion and energy to engage youth and adults
- Experience with leading various sized groups (or willing to learn)
Qualifications:
- Knowledge keeper or cultural/traditional training, land based learning
- Varied educational qualifications and experiences will be considered
- Knowledge of an Indigenous language would be an asset
- Valid driver’s license
Wage - $75,000 to $85,000 dependent on experience
Work Environment – office based with some travel to school communities, MS Office and other technology provided, use of division vehicle for travel, team support, time off for school holidays
The successful candidate will have the ability to take initiative and work independently with a positive and supportive attitude in a team environment.
