JOB DESCRIPTION FOR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

For over 40 years, Hestia House has been a safe refuge for women and children facing intimate partner violence in Saint John, New Brunswick. Hestia House provides emergency shelter, as well as counselling and other support, for women and children experiencing violence in their home or personal relationships.

Hestia House is currently seeking an energetic Executive Director to oversee daily operations and provide direction to all areas of the organization. Hestia House values collaboration, partnerships, inclusivity, trauma-informed approaches, and professionalism. We are seeking a leader with a proven track record demonstrating these values.

The chosen candidate will provide strategic and innovative leadership to the organization, mobilize required resources, and ensure best practices for quality service delivery. This individual will also provide financial leadership by managing budgets, securing funding, and monitoring long-term strategic fiscal plans.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ORGANIZATIONAL GOVERNANCE

  • Provide leadership in developing programming and financial plans.
  • Develop a strategic and operational plan to guide the organization, in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
  • Identify and evaluate the risks to the organization’s people (clients, staff, management, and volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image, and implement measures to control such risks.
  • Ensure the Board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all- important factors influencing it.

FINANCE

  • Prepare the yearly budget, in conjunction with the accounting team and Board of Directors.
  • Administer the organization’s funds according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of the organization.
  • Approve expenditures within the authority delegated by the Board.
  • Research funding sources, oversee the development of fundraising plans, and write funding proposals to increase the funds of the organization.
  • Report on expenditure forecasts, including capital projects.

HUMAN RESOURCES

  • Participate in the review and development of Hestia House policies and ensure consistent adherence to said policies.
  • Monitor the training and professional development of direct reports.
  • Conduct interviews and fill job vacancies as required.
  • Provide annual performance reviews for staff members, maintain staff records, and oversee vacation time/overtime.
  • Ensure hirings and terminations are conducted in such a way that reflect organizational values.
  • Foster positive organizational culture through change management techniques.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

  • Support compliance with the Workplace Violence Program and other recommendations developed by the JOHSC.
  • Ensure all staff are aware of and adhere to current and relevant legislation, i.e., Occupational Health and Safety, Food Premise Act, Accessibility Act.
  • Develop and implement a crisis management plan.

EXTERNAL RELATIONS

  • Represent Hestia House when interacting with other agencies, organizations, and the general public.
  • Liaise with other transition houses in Atlantic Canada.
  • Publicize the organization, its programs/activities, and its goals, and advocate for survivors of intimate partner violence.
  • Establish good working relationships with community groups, funders, politicians, and other organizations within the same field.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience within a leadership position.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the complex nature of the population Hestia House serves and the organization’s guiding philosophies of client-centered care and harm reduction.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage key external relationships, including with donors, business partners, government agencies, and political leaders on all three levels.
  • Ability to identify key issues facing the organization and strategically overcome internal and external challenges.
  • Knowledge of current issues, policies, practices, and interventions related to intimate partner violence.
  • Demonstrated public relations skills including presentations, media coverage, and the development of written/verbal communication strategies.
  • Proficiency in fiscal management, business finance, capital funding, contracts, and partnerships.
  • Knowledge of personnel policies, practices, and procedures.
