Position: Compression Systems Technician

Location: Burnaby, BC, Canada

General Fusion is transforming how the world is energized by developing the first commercially-viable fusion power plant. Fusion will deliver clean, safe and on-demand power at industrial scale, providing a powerful complement to renewables and a pathway to a zero-emission grid.

Combining new technologies, proven industrial processes, and advances in fundamental fusion science, General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to develop commercial fusion power. Key performance requirements have been demonstrated at the system level, setting the stage for building a pre-commercial fusion power prototype.

Position Overview

The Compression Systems Technician will provide hands-on support of mechanical and electrical equipment as well as diagnostic systems currently in use or under development on General Fusion’s compression test beds.

Key Responsibilities

• Assemble and install custom-built equipment in the laboratory.
• Design and construct mechanical jigs, fixtures, stands, brackets and holders using varied materials including: steel, aluminum, extrusions, plastic, lumber.
• Perform tests on a variety of subsystems, apply critical observation skills to results, and communicate findings to engineering staff.
• Manage pipe, fibre & cable routing; build cable and sensor assemblies.
• Assist in equipment maintenance and upgrade operations.
• Specify and order parts and materials for projects.
• Manage inventory and storage of common parts and shop tools.
• Work independently, while taking the initiative to gather information from colleagues.
• Proactively contribute to a great work environment while championing safe work practices.
  

Required

Relevant Skills and Experience:

• Hands-on experience with installing and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems.
• Basic machine shop skills (manual mill, lathe, bandsaw, etc.) and experience with power tools.
• Ability to take an idea from concept to completion.
• Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
• Strong comprehension skills and the ability to closely follow instructions.
• Positive attitude to repetitive tasks and attention to detail.
• Willingness to operate in a fast-paced environment with rapidly evolving priorities.
• Good time management skills.
• Strong multi-disciplinary skillset with demonstrated experience in diagnosing, repairing and solving system/equipment challenges.
• Experience with basic computer programs (Excel, etc).
• Ability to lift 20 kg.
• Strong safety mindset.
  

Preferred

• Hands on experience working with a wide variety of mechanical and electrical equipment in a research or product development lab environment.
• Experience with welding and fabrication
• Hands-on experience with installing and troubleshooting optical, fibre-optic or laser systems.
• Familiarity with 3D CAD design software (SolidWorks).
• Familiarity with 3D printing (SLA or FDM)
  

The work involved in this project combines a wide range of skill sets; this role also requires individuals who are self-motivated, have good communication skills, and are comfortable with creative problem solving independently and within a group.
