Position Overview

The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Communications Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 18 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Lead of Community Engagement for the Charbonneau Cancer Institute, Director of the Robson DNA Science Centre, and Scientific Lead of The Evict Radon National Study. The role involves activities within all three (inter-related) units.

The Communications Assistant will use their communications, public relations and public health outreach experience and expertise to assist in the preparation of online, print, and video communications material for The Charbonneau institute, Robson DNA Science Centre and Evict Radon National Study (henceforth referred to as "all three units").

The role will have frequent interactions with the investigators, faculty, and staff of all three units. This position may work with sensitive or confidential materials and demands the ability to exercise excellent judgment, discretion, and independent thought regarding the effective management of internal and external information. The Communications Assistant will set their own priorities to manage a broad spectrum of overlapping multiple projects with competing mandates.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Working closely with the research community (members, trainees, staff) of all three units to understand what constitutes a new and important discovery and provide administrative assistance as needed
  • Maintain content, and assist in the management and oversight for the website and social media accounts of all three units
  • Collaborate with the teams of all three units and external web content and development vendors
  • Assist the communication coordinators and teams in the implementation of the communications strategy designed to increase awareness and advance the mission of all three units
  • Gain a cross-sectional understanding of the diverse researchers comprising all three units, to the extent necessary to effectively communicate this work to the general public
  • Coordinate writing, editing, proofreading and production of communication materials
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and French
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant area such as communications, public relations, and/or marketing
  • Minimum 1 years of relevant, related experience in communications and/or website development and/or social media
  • Experience with social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter
  • Communication experience with emphasis on strategic planning, decision-making, highly developed organizational, analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to anticipate requirements, plan, organize and coordinate
  • Experience producing a variety of communication vehicles aimed at various audiences
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills required in dealing with a range of situations, which may include complex, sensitive, and confidential issues
  • Familiarity with shooting, editing, and producing video segments is an asset
  • Familiarity with cancer and/or public health is considered a major strength / asset
  • Knowledge of the Cumming School of Medicine and University culture and operating procedures with strong understanding of the University’s mission and values
  • High level of proficiency in writing and editing a variety of documents for a wide range of audiences/stakeholders
  • Ability to operate within a multi-faceted work environment and be a strong team player with capability to adjust work schedules to meet multiple demands and pressures
  • Experience working with the media both in a reactive and strategic planning capacity
  • Experience with the planning, scheduling, and production of print and electronic products and executing events for various sized groups
