What You Can Expect In a Typical Day

Category management is the supply chain management function designed to deliver significant value by leveraging size, spend and knowledge on key categories of materials and services. This role will drive category management methodology and practices as it links to the overall Category Management approach. The capability systematically separates purchased materials and services into distinct groups (categories) to strategically manage them. It involves identifying category sourcing opportunities and prioritizing them in partnership with internal customer groups; developing and executing new sourcing initiatives and/or leveraging ongoing agreements; managing daily operations and demand drivers; building stakeholder relationships; and driving continuous improvement activities within the category.

The Category Manager, Corporate is a leadership and management position responsible for development and execution of category plans along with managing all core procurement activities associated with Information Technology (hardware, software and security), Facilities, Brand, Professional Services and other Corporate procurement requirements within Irving Oil. This position has leadership and management responsibility for 5-7 team members.

Functional/Technical
  • Develop strategic visions for categories, with an understanding of internal business drivers and economics of the sourcing and procurement market.
  • Engage with strategic planning and budgeting organizations to align on strategic goals and provide input into budgeting process
  • Performs opportunity analysis to identify projects that will deliver significant cost savings and value improvement
  • Lead development of category profiles and sourcing strategies
  • Identify category stakeholders and engage them in the strategic sourcing projects
  • Lead cross-functional teams in the development of sourcing strategies for key spend categories and sub-categories
  • Lead the development and execution of RFIs, RFPs, reverse auctions, and compose service contracts and supply agreements as required within the category
  • Structure and negotiate supply agreements and manage supplier relations and performance
  • Select, manage, and maintain and Approved Suppliers list within the category that is financially sound, technically competent, and strategically aligned
  • Lead the development and execution of contract management plans for all business-critical suppliers within the category
  • Manage escalations on behalf of vendors and stakeholders
  • Ensure the overall security of supply of key products within the Supply Chain, including understanding market trends and potential geopolitical impacts.
  • Ensure compliance with procurement policies and procedures, ethical practices, and adherence to relevant laws and regulations to mitigate risk.
  • Apply creativity and solid judgment when working on complex negotiations and problem-solving opportunities
  • Identify and implement opportunities to optimize sourcing processes and internal supply chain processes impacting the category

Education And Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, Sciences, Business Administration or related field.
  • Supply Change Management Professional (SCMP) designation or other similar designation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of contract law.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in leadership positions with increasing experience accountability and responsibility.
  • Experience with IT systems and contracts would be an asset, including vendor drafted contracts, licensing agreements, infrastructure and application contracting, professional services agreements and scopes of work.
  • Experience leading, facilitating and executing strategic sourcing files effectively (creation of cross functional teams, establishment of sponsors, ability to challenge the status quo, ensure implementation of solution, clear transition / handoff and establishment of benefit tracking measures).
