Position Description

The Departments of Surgery and Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services - Calgary Zone, in partnership with The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute, invite applications for a Contingent Term academic position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of General Surgery/Breast Surgical Oncology. The successful applicant will have their primary appointment in the Department of Surgery with a joint appointment in the Department of Oncology.

The candidate will join a 16-member division of General Surgery at the Foothills Medical Centre, an 1100+ inpatient tertiary care academic hospital and the adjacent New Calgary Cancer Centre with a dedicated comprehensive multidisciplinary Breast Centre. The Centre will deliver world class cancer care in a state-of-the-art facility, inclusive of research infrastructure. Membership in Strategies for Precision Health in Breast Cancer (SPHERE) under the umbrella of the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute which is inclusive of scientists, analysts and research staff, is expected and will provide dedicated research support.

Qualifications include an MD, be an active or be eligible to be a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) in General Surgery, with clinical fellowship training in Breast Surgery/Surgical Oncology with a focus on Breast Surgery, and eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta. Candidates must be able to demonstrate academic excellence in clinical and/or health services research. The successful candidate is expected to hold a research focused degree (Masters or PhD). They should have a proven track record of excellence in research, publications as first or senior author in high impact peer-reviewed journals, presentations at academic meetings and be able to demonstrate the potential to successfully compete for peer-reviewed funding at the national level. Contributions to trainee supervision, mentorship and teaching will be expected. Applicants should include how their research program or vision aligns with the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute’s cancer research framework in their research interest statement. The demonstration of effective teaching, supervision and mentorship in their teaching philosophy statement will be valued from the successful candidate.
