WHO IS AN INTERIM YOUTH NAVIGATOR?

Youth Navigators within our organization are responsible for providing navigation and outreach services to individuals that are vulnerable in their transitions to adulthood. This includes one to one, and group work designed to identify and access community resources, and build skills, knowledge, and abilities to live successfully and interdependently in the community. Services will take place in the community, as well as at Foundry Kelowna.

This is a interim full-time position offering 35 hours per week with a typical work week of Monday to Friday 9:30am-5:00pm. Occasional evenings may be required. This position is expected to be filled on a temporary basis until the incumbent has returned.

WHAT DOES A YOUTH NAVIGATOR DO?

  • Participates in case planning with participants and/or health and social service providers by performing duties such as interviewing clients to identify problems and needs, obtaining required information from a variety of sources such as families and care providers, documenting participant needs and wants, and assisting participants to determine appropriate programs;
  • Advocates for participants by problem solving in areas such as landlord-tenant disputes, financial assistance, accessing community resources, and obtaining volunteer placements;
  • Observes participants, identifies and assesses potential emergency situations, and develops short-term strategies to deal with such situations. Reports medical, behavioural, and other problems as required. Provide feedback and input regarding participants’ needs, performance, and progress;
  • Assist with the development of physical, social, emotional, and life skills such as maintaining personal hygiene, housekeeping, meal planning and preparation, meeting financial obligations, making and keeping appointments, and interpersonal skills;
  • Identifies available social, economic, recreational, and educational services and resources in the community that will meet participants’ needs. Provide participants with related information;
  • Carries out administrative transactions such as petty cash, participant accounts, and rent supplements. Completes and maintains related records and documentation such as case files, progress reports, statistics, and daily logs;
  • Receives participant feedback, and inquiries and complaints, and responds as required;
  • Performs other duties as required.

YOUR STRENGTHS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Degree and/or Diploma in Community/Social/Human Services;
  • Recent, related experience of two years or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience or other qualifications determined to be reasonable and relevant to the level of work;
  • Criminal Record Check in the Vulnerable Sector is required;
  • Class V BC Driver’s License is required;
  • Certification in First Aid (w/ CPR) is considered an asset;
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position;
  • Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others;
  • Ability to operate related equipment;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to organize and prioritize;
  • Ability to observe and recognize changes in participants;
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with participants;
  • Ability to instruct;
  • Ability to analyze and resolve problems;
  • Conflict resolution.
