Water/Sewer Technician

Anticipatory Staffing (30 weeks per year)
COMPETITION #2023-006

The Town of Gander is currently accepting applications for a seasonal 30 week Water/Sewer Technician within the Public Works Department.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Water & Sewer Technician inspects and maintains the water and sewer infrastructure such as collection and distribution lines, air release valves, hydrants, lift stations, performs utility locates, exercises system valves and responds to system emergencies.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Inspects and maintains distribution and collection systems; Outside water/sewer maintenance including leak detection, repair, and dig ups; Performs system fire flow tests, inspects and maintains fire hydrants, and exercises water and sewer system valves annually; Lift Station inspections and maintenance; Completes water and sewer line repairs and fire hydrant replacements; Responds to water and sewer emergencies; Performs water turn-ons and turn offs; Performs utility locates of water and sewer lines; Performs water system leak detection; Preform daily duties throughout the department on weekends and holidays; General maintenance and cleaning in and around building structures; Other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including ability to lift 50 lbs (22Kgs); Exposed to dirt and soil, sewage, chemicals and hazards of working around moving equipment and with power tools; Working indoors and outdoors in all types of weather; Work with and control pedestrian and vehicle traffic; Will be on call on a rotational basis which will include work on weekends and holidays; Subject to call in or to remain on the job for emergencies; Routine exposure to organic wastewater and materials; Physical dexterity required. Including but not limited to walking, bending, kneeling, climbing and lifting; Manual dexterity required to operate and calibrate field equipment, tools, and computer peripherals;
Will be required to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in inclement weather conditions; Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision, coordinate / plan work and function as part of a team; Exceptional customer service skills with a strong sense of public service and cooperation, and well developed abilities to deal with the public and citizens’ groups.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

Completion of high school or equivalent; Completion of plumbing or mechanical post-secondary program plus two years of water and sewer experience; Level 2 certification in the relevant fields. These include: Waste Water Collection, Water
Distribution, Water Treatment, Waste Water Treatment; Post-Secondary courses from an accredited intuition in a relevant field will be considered an asset; Previous municipal experience working in the water or wastewater field would be as asset; Certification in workplace hazardous materials information system (WHMIS); Standard First Aid / CPR
Certification; Certificate of Conduct ; Class 5 driver’s license; Clear certificates of conduct including a RCMP Criminal
Record Check and a Provincial Court Check, is a condition of employment.

SALARY: Unionized position, 40 hours/week - $29.36/hour.
