Overview:
Reporting to the Supervisor, Vehicle Safety, the Vehicle Safety Officer independently audits inspection stations, dealers, and recyclers for compliance to legislated and regulatory requirements. The Vehicle Safety Officer inspects vehicles to determine the quality of inspections performed by permit holders, identifies any issues, and gathers information to prepare a report for the supervisor that outlines any sanctions and recommendations.
Responsibilities:
  • Monitors and audits inspection stations, dealers, recyclers, and salespersons through regular visits to ensure compliance with applicable acts and regulations, in addition to the requirements of the Manitoba Vehicle Safety Program
  • Responsible for one of 11 geographic territories across Manitoba, each containing roughly 140-150 inspection stations
  • Applies the corporate policies to assess the relative risk of all stations in their territory and ensure that those most in need of attention are audited for compliance with protocols; initiates appropriate enforcement, education or countermeasures action based on the audit findings
  • Investigates consumer complaints regarding inspections, equipment deficiencies, and requirements for stations, mechanics, and dealers
  • Investigates and follows up on enquiries from within MPI and from law enforcement
  • Exercises an extremely high degree of accountability in handling of confidential information obtained during the course of an investigation
  • Identifies and assesses instances of vehicle condition non-compliance and assigns responsibility for substandard work or non-compliance with regulations against inspection stations and mechanics, which may lead to sanction actions against permit holders
  • Provides customer service to walk-in and phone-in customers. Receives complaints, accepts station and mechanic applications, and provides guidance to customers, inspection stations, mechanics and dealers in regard to equipment standards and complaint resolution
  • Participates in the development of standards and policies and procedures pertaining to vehicle safety activities
  • Assists in the training of new hires
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Automotive Service:
  • Journeyperson Certificate (Red Seal) Automotive Service Technician
  • Five years of bench experience in automotive repair, including one year experience in a customer service capacity
Motor Vehicle Body Repair
  • Journeyperson Certificate (Red Seal) Motor Vehicle Body Repairer
  • Five years of bench experience in autobody repair, including one year experience in a customer service capacity
Truck and Transport Mechanic
  • Journeyperson Certificate (Red Seal) Truck and Transport Mechanic, or Transport Trailer Mechanic
  • Five years of bench experience in heavy truck and trailer repair, including one year experience in a customer service capacity
In addition to the above:
  • Platinum status in Estimator or Auto Physical Damage Appraiser role within the I-CAR Gold Class Professionals Designation program, or willingness to complete and maintain designation.
  • Experience as an authorized body integrity inspection station mechanic an asset.
  • Experience in a leadership capacity (i.e. foreman) is an asset.
